Chester Krolewicz Obituary

Chester J. Krolewicz , 89, of Marshfield, was a musician, jazz guitarist, and music teacher. He died November 27, 2013 at Brockton Hospital. Born in Cambridge, he was known as "Chet Kruley. His vast knowledge of guitar, in general, and jazz guitar, in particular, set him apart as a noted expert, and musician. He began his musical career playing guitar with Fletcher Hendersons Swing Band in the early 1940s, at the age of 19. He was the first white guitarist to join an all-black band, breaking the reverse color line. A close personal friend of Elmer Stromberg, famous arch-top guitar builder in Boston, Chet was an endorser of Stromberg guitars and played them exclusively throughout his career. He is listed under Stromberg Guitars in Wikipedia among noted users, including: Freddie Green, Doug Ranger Green, Barry Galbraith, Fred Guy, and John Payne,Tony Rizzi. Chet was an accomplished guitarist. At the height of his career, he played for famous jazz singers and celebrities like Anita ODay, Morgana King, Robert Goulet, Frank Sinatra, Sid Ceaser, Tony Bennett, Bob Hope, Rich Little, Perry Como, Jimmie Lunceford, Jackie Gleason and Nat Pierce. Chet supported U.S. Military troops, by providing entertainment with the USO Camp Shows around the world. He spent several years as Diana Rosss lead guitarist, and performed with the Supremes, and actor Lou Gossett Junior. He recorded with violin virtuoso, Fred Elias, on a Middle Eastern Recording and traveled nationwide with Broadway performances such as Camelot, Bye Bye Birdie, Pippin, The Zulu and the Zada, and many others. He taught at Berklee College of Music, and later, began private lessons at Central Music in Brockton and Ricks Music World. Among his many students were Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo, Patty Larkin, jazz guitarist, Bob Sneider and guitarist, teacher Daniel Byrnes. In recent years he continued teaching students, as well as repairing and building guitars. He loved to teach, and enjoyed watching his students grow. It gave him personal satisfaction. All who had the privilege of his teaching, his friendship, and love, will miss him dearly. He was a gentleman, and testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Cool man! Son of the late Sygmond and Mary (Nieminski) Krulewicz; brother of the late Jane T. Brazitis and Helene H. Bowers. Chester is survived by several nieces and nephews, Edmund Brazaitis of Stoughton, Richard D. Bowers and his wife Donna M. of Plympton, Barbara Moore and her husband Robert of Phoenix, AZ and a great-niece Marisa T. Bowers of Pasadena, CA. Chet taught my little sister, and came to the house outside Boston in suburbs. He asked me if I wanted to learn and I tried but didn't like it at all, nor the feel of those sharp strings. It never left me though. I few years later , mid 70s, I tried and bought a Bass and a Vox Amp at a pawn shop, and instantly it felt Great! That was 45 years ago! I was surprised to learn of his background. I wish we knew, .....what stories he could have told us!
I can't forget the guy. I watched my sister's lessons, and something stuck!

What a joy you brought to life, man, you brought life to life, what a pleasure it was to be a student of yours at Central Music in the 1980's.. You made it exciting to learn guitar, and though I was a terrible student you were very patient and kind, your stories were the stuff of legend, you were truly one of a kind, the kind of person people write books about, anyone who reads this would agree,And not to mention your excellence musically,I could pay you for the lessons just to listen to you play some of that great Jazz you played...Man..you were a cool cat....You are sorely missed "Chet"

RIP Chet.

To Chet's family, what a great loss to have him gone. chet in his younger days lived with my parents in Bridgewater,Vermont and played with my dad in a band. In later years when I was young Chet visited us in Bradford, Vermont. We would always look forward to him coming up and visiting us. My mom used to tell us the story of a young Chet who went with them tothe Rutland, Vermont fair in a white linen suit. Welll that suit didn'T Stay white long when the horses went by him. My mom would always grin when she told that story. When mom would come down to Mass we would always bring her to Central Music, or Ricks to visit Chet. Our memories will always be with us ancd may you all find peace and confort withthese stories. Luana Furman Rich, East Taunton, Mass

Chet was my teacher from the age of 6 until 18. He was my mentor and friend for life. In my life as a professional musician and teacher, I can say that I've never met a more dedicated and gifted teacher than Chet Kruley. He had a way of making learning so much fun. I still am amazed that he was the same teacher that showed me TV show themes like Gilligans Island....heavy metal tunes -- AC/DC and then one day I asked him about jazz....he unloaded on me with thousands of chords, stylistic vocabulary, technical exercises, arpeggios and introduced me to the greats of jazz guitar. He armed me with a lifetime of information -- the core essence of my own teaching now. Chet even made house calls when I was recovering from a back operation...he gave me bedside jazz guitar lessons. Those visits did so much for my morale.

Throughout my career, he has been a constant source of support and encouragement. Anytime I had a new cd release...he was my first mailing. His stamp of approval meant so much more than a print review.

Chet has enriched the lives of thousands of students over the years. He have so much to every student when he could've continued a prolific performing career. I will try to channel his spirit into my teaching. He gave me so much. No way I can thank him enough. I will always remember the best lesson of all: 'Bobby, no matter what....you can learn concepts, stylistic licks, but you have to do your own thing! You have to develop your own style but be true to the art of jazz!'

Love you Chet....you're the best!

So sorry to hear of Chet's passing. My son took lessons from him when he was just a little guy. Chet was always so patient and instilled a love of the guitar and jazz. I always enjoyed taking him to his lesson and chatting with Chet.

Aww, Chet. This is truly sad news. I was proud to have been his student, and prouder still that he was such a good friend through the years. It was always nice to bump into him here and there and share some laughs or reminisces. I will miss Chet's infectious laugh for certain. My most heartfelt condolences to Chet's family and friends; our loss is great.

My sympathy to Chet's family and friends. He was such a gentle man and a wonderful teacher. I was glad to be his friend. I never knew he was so famous as a guitarist. He only talked about his USO work! I will miss him terribly !

Chet was a great historian and story teller. I am lucky to have been able to study under him albeit for only a brief period. You will be missed. Thank you.

I was a horrible student; but he never held it against me. Listening to his stories of the Fletcher Henderson days was as close to time travel as anyone could ever get.
