Janie Gates Patterson

Janie G. Patterson Janie Gates Patterson, 74, of Wytheville died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011. A memorial service was held Thursday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. A graveside service was held Friday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Walter and Alta M. Gates; a brother, John G. Gates; and four sisters, Evelyn G. Johnson, Stella G. Scott, Eula G. Burnett and infant Alice M. Gates. Survivors include her husband, Charles L. Patterson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen P. and James Hudson of Gallatin, Tenn., and Susan P. and Rusty Jones of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Derek and Debborah Patterson of Williamsburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth G. and John Sheffield of Glade Spring; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James F. and Eleanor Gates of Galax, and George F. and Janice Gates of Bedford; six grandchildren, Blake Hudson, Beau Hudson, Lilly Patterson, Luke Patterson, Charlie Jones and Dylan Jones; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Wythe County Public Schools Foundation for Excellence, P.O. Box 815, Wytheville, VA 24382, in memory of her 30 years of dedication to the teaching profession; or the Alzheimer's Association, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.
