Jerrold Shelley Obituary

Jerrold "Jerry" Fremont Shelley, 62, of Yuma and Scottsdale, Arizona, departed this life and continued into the next, on Thursday, June 2, 2011 in Yuma, Arizona.
Jerry was born on March 23, 1949, in Chuquicamata, Chile, where his father worked as an accountant with a United States mining company. At the age of 9 he moved with his family to Kearny, Arizona, where his father continued to work in the mining industry and served as Town Mayor in the early 1960's.
Jerry graduated from Ray High School in Kearny in 1967, where he was a high school tennis State champion. He later received his bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona, and in 1975 earned his law degree at the University of Arizona College of Law.
Following law school Jerry worked as a public defender in Apache County, Arizona, and in 1977 moved to Yuma where he worked as a prosecutor for the Yuma County Attorney's Office. Shortly thereafter he began a thriving private practice, which he continued for the next thirty-three years, focusing on the areas of family law, criminal law, bankruptcy, personal injury, and general civil litigation. Jerry also served as a court commissioner for the Yuma County Superior Court.
Jerry was a faithful and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served in many church leadership callings including 1st Counselor in the Second Ward Bishopric, Stake High Counselor, High Priest Group Leader, Young Men's President, Seminary Teacher, and Gospel Doctrine Teacher. Most recently Jerry served alongside his wife, Nancy, as a teacher for primary children in the Chaparral Ward in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he and Nancy spent their weekends for the past several years.
Jerry was a devoted and loving husband who counted his wife of 36 years as his best friend and eternal companion. Likewise, he was a loyal and faithful son and brother, who took into his home each of his parents, Jay and Jan Shelley, and his wife's parents, in the final years of their lives. For the past 6 years he lived with, loved, and took care of his special needs brother, John.
He was also a devoted and fun-loving father and grandfather who was always generous with his time, advice, and wonderful sense of humor. His hobbies and interests were wide-ranging, and included spending time with his children and grandchildren, studying the scriptures and gospel topics, vacationing in San Diego, tinkering with and maintaining his cars (and his children's cars), and carrying out a seemingly endless series of home improvement and repair projects which kept him busy during his weekends in Scottsdale.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Nancy; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Jennifer Shelley; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Ryan Freeman; his daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and John Poulsen, and his youngest son, Jason. He is also survived by his brothers, Jay F. Shelley (Karen) and John F. Shelley, and his sister Joan Holmes (John). He also left behind 11 beloved grandchildren: Bridget, Price, and Carter (Shelley); Ryland, Bailey, Taylor, Hayden and Noah (Freeman); and Trey, Grady, and Miles (Poulsen).
Services will be held in Yuma, Arizona on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 4300 W. 16th Street, Yuma, Arizona. Services will also be held in Scottsdale, Arizona at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 6840 E. Gold Dust, Scottsdale, Arizona 85253. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Bunker's Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa AZ. 85201.

Although I did not know Jerry personally, we attended the same high school, albeit in different eras. I do know his sister Joan well, as we did attend school together, although we haven't seen each other for a number of years. My deepest sympathies go to Joan and the Shelley family for this horrible tragedy.

I graduated from Ray High with Jerry. He was a good friend and such a smart and fun loving guy. I was the only girl in the senior Trigonometry class with Jerry and he helped ease me through it. I haven't seen him in all these years but I am not surprised to read that he turned into such a successful, loving man. I am so very sorry for his family. Know that even after many years we are thinking of you.

This is life eternal - The salvation purchased by Christ, and given to them who believe, is called life:

1. Because the life of man was forfeited to Divine justice; and the sacrifice of Christ redeemed him from that death to which he was exposed.

2. Because the souls of men were dead in trespasses and sins; and Christ quickens them by his word and Spirit.

3. Because men who are not saved by the grace of Christ do not live, they only exist, no good purpose of life being answered by them. But when they receive this salvation they live - answer all the Divine purposes, are happy in themselves, useful to each other, and bring glory to God.

4. It is called eternal life to show that it reaches beyond the limits of time, and that it necessarily implies -

1. The immortality of the soul;

2. the resurrection of the body; and

3. that it is never to end

Keep God's Commandments, and live by them...

Shelley Family -

My heartfelt sympathy to everyone...

My father's mother was Mary Maud Shelley, who married Joseph Isiah Porter. My father, Lorin Donald Porter, was born in Joseph City, but later the Porter's and Shelley's moved to and settled Heber, AZ. As you drive through Heber you will see a statue of Mary Maud Shelley Porter in front of "Mary Maud's" Antiques. I would like to know how I am related to Jerry... Who was his grandfather? I know many of my Shelley relatives who are or were attorney's...LaMar, Melvyn, Gail, Gerald, Craig and more, but I do not believe I ever met Jerry. I have clients in Yuma, but our paths never crossed. Anyway, you are from good stock and I am proud to be a shirt-tail relative.

May the many memories Jerry helped creat find root in your hearts and bring sweet recollection to your minds as you both mourn and celebrate his life. The sure knowledge we have of the eternal nature of family will bring comfort and peace.

God bless you as you deal with his untimely passing.

Nancy, our love and prayers go out to you and your family. I was the other half of Jerry's and my state Tennis Championship in doubles our Senior Year. He, I and John roomed together our Sophmore year at the UofA. We briefly caught up in Yuma a number of years ago while I was on a business trip. The world has lost a real "difference maker". His smile and sense of humor will be missed by all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Jerry was a great deal of help to us through the years we will never forget his smile. We are thankful we had the pleasure of knowing him.

June 7, 2011

Just about every time Jerry and I met to talk about a case, we talked about his son Scott, who I knew from law school. His eyes would light up when he spoke about his son.

Jerry's death still doesn't seem real.

We wish all the best for Jerry's family and friends.

Sincerely,

My sincerest condolences to the Shelley family. Jerry was a gentle caring man who deeply loved his family. I remember his dedication to his profession and helping those in need by donating time to those who could not afford an attorney. I remember that his faith and devotion to family were of utmost importance. My daughter, Andrea, went to school with Scott, and I know how proud your Dad was of you. Jerry helped make so many lives better and the light of his good deeds will never fade. May the Good Lord keep you in his care and the love and prayers of your family and friends and those who respected Jerry help you in these trying times.

To the Shelley family. Words can not express the sorrow and pain that was caused last week. I lived in Yuma for 4 years while on Active Duty in the Marine Corps and Jerry delt with my ex-wife and my child support revision. He treated me fairly, and with the utmost courtesy and respect. He even played with my year old son Noah while he was at the office with us. I remember him telling me and my current wife that he was proud of his grandkids and that he liked the name Noah for that reason. You have mine and my family's sympathy's and prayers during this tragic time for your family.

He was a good man and always gave good advice to share. I Thank him for being there for my Mother as her lawyer and more importantly as friend. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones for their loss, he is in our prayer's and will be missed.

I will always remember Jerry's smile. I lived across the street from him. We were on the tennis team together in high school and double dated. I dated him once in college. I spilled purple punch on a white rug at the apartment during a party. I was embarrassed, but Jerry immediately took away the embarrassment by suggesting that we dye the rug in the punch bowl. I was so happy when he found his wife and know that you will be together again. Jerry was always so caring of John. I have no doubts that he will be missed but never forgotten. My heartfelt prayers go out to all of you.
