Doris Merrifield Obituary
Doris Merrifield, 96 of age passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014, in Yuma, AZ. She was born in Howard Lake, MN January 17, 1918. She married Robert Sanderson and resided in Spicer, MN. They moved to Sacramento, CA in 1944 where her daughter Cheryl was born.
Doris was interested in many things and had a variety of jobs. She started out as a window trimmer at Penny's, did occupational therapy work at Willmar State Hospital. Next she learned to be a florist, then decorated cakes and delivered wedding cakes ever Saturday for years. She drove a school bus in Sacramento for 12 years and in odd hours she did the janitors work at the nearby Christian Church for 12 years. She retired from all 3 jobs when she was 62 years old. After Robert died she met and married Harry Stock in 1980 that died after surgery in 1997. Later she married their good friend of many years Al Merrifield and lived in Yuma AZ until her passing. At 84 years of age, Doris started art classes at William Alexander Painting seminars in Silver Falls, OR. Also watched TV and art shows. She sold hundreds of paintings on canvas and painted envelopes which kept her busy in her last years of life. She was noted for her many paintings of her favorite "Betty Boop"; one of her favorite ones is hanging at Lutes Casino in Downtown Yuma.
Doris and her husband Al Merrifield loved dancing and were charter members of the Golden Roadrunners in Downtown Yuma. Al Merrifield and Doris started the Albert W. and Doris Merrifield endowment Fund, that will eventually build a Hospice House that will take care if low income and terminal patients in the Yuma area.
She is survived by her daughter Cheryl Hobbs, sister in law, Maryon McCalla of Dassel, MN; many nieces and nephews from the mid west. Also many friends and neighbors in the Del Oro Home Court, where she lived until her death. Thanks to Hospice of Yuma for their excellent care and concern for Doris.
At her request, Doris was cremated and her ashes will be buried at her parents' burial plot in Howard Lake, MN. She also requested no services. In lieu of flower donation can be made Albert W. and Doris Merrifield trust and Fund for the Hospice House.
