William Bauer Obituary

Bauer, COL William Bennet, USA (Ret.), died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday morning, July 10th 2008. The son of a World War II veteran and Naval Aviator, Bill was born the first of five children at San Diego, CA in 1945. During the course of his father's career in the Navy, the family lived in Guam, Hawaii, and multiple locations throughout the United States. A retired Army colonel with 27 years of service, Bill entered the army as a private in 1966 during the Vietnam War. Commissioned as an infantry officer in 1967, he served 18 months as a helicopter pilot, platoon leader, and air mission commander in Vietnam. He later served twice on assignments in Europe during the Cold War, and he culminated his career at the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command at Ft. Monroe, Virginia. He has continued to serve his country as a military contractor with Northrop-Grumman at the United States Joint Forces Command Joint Warfighting Center in Suffolk, Virginia. Like his childhood, Bill's Army career sent him, his wife, and two boys to locations throughout the United States and Europe. At the age of 44, he was finally able to settle in Yorktown, Virginia, where he resided for the past 19 years. During that time, he was involved in the 4th of July and York County Historical Committees, and he was an active member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Bill is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joan; his son, Major John Bauer and wife, Hilary; his son, Captain Brian Bauer and wife, Lindsey; his parents, Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Leo and Yvonne Bauer of Los Alamitos, CA; two brothers, Jay and Leo Jr.; and two sisters, Valetta and Wanda. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Seth Michael, Bennett John, Hailey Elaine, Anna Therese, and Bernadette Marie. Bill is remembered as a devoted and selfless man who sought to quietly serve others in all that he did. He will be dearly missed. A vigil service will be held at the Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, on Sunday evening, July 13 at 7:00pm. The family will receive friends following the service. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on Monday, July 14 at 5:00pm and a reception will follow the service at the church. A graveside service with military honors will be held to 11:00am on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, in Arlington National Cemetery. Amory Funeral Home Grafton, VA

To all of the Bauer Family;
I attended flight school In Mineral Wells, TX with Bill and later served with him in RVN at the 192nd AHC 1968-69. I always admired his professionalism and I know he is dearly missed by all who had the privledge of knowing Bill. He was a friend in flight school and a true warrior in combat. I still recall how much he loved that special Mustang. This is a such late entry. I just recently learned of his passsing and today I discovered this guestbook. God bless and keep all of you.

It was a personal & professional pleasure to have worked with Bill these past 12 years. His dedication to the mission & willingness to listen to and actively help others was greatly appreciated by all who work here, especially those of us in the OPFOR. What impressed me most though was his love for his family. He will be deeply missed. Prayers continue for your family.

Jack and I wish to express our deepest sympathy to your family. Bill was not only a co-worker, he was also a friend. Our son's served in Iraq at the same time and Bill always took the time to come by and ask how Ryan was doing. I remember he use to always tell me to hang in there, that God was in control and that "our boys" would return home safely. Your husband and father was loved by all and will truly be missed. May God bless you all.

To the family of Col. Bauer,
I believe Col. Bauer was my Battalion Commander at Ft. Rucker during 1984-1986 time frame. I didn't know he was in the area. He was an outstanding leader and everyone in the unit looked up to him. He was fair and always approachable. I wanted you to know he touched my life and will never forget him.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
