James Barrick Obituary

James M. Barrick KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - James Richard Monroe Barrick, 60, went home to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully in his home after a long battle with cancer, Friday morning Oct. 3, 2008. Jimmy was from Portsmouth and resided in Florida for many years. He was born June 17, 1948, and was of Baptist faith. Jimmy treasured time spent on the water and especially loved boating and spending time at the beach enjoying the ocean breeze. He started his real estate career in Ocala, Fla., in the 1970s with Jim Walter Homes Inc. and soon moved to Tallahassee, Fla., and with two other partners started his own business, Penny Worth Homes. Even though he resided in Seminole territory, he was an ardent Gators fan. He later moved to Williamsburg where he continued his work in real estate. In 2004, Jimmy moved to Knoxville and worked for Horton Homes. He was preceded in death by his father, I. Monroe Barrick formerly of Portsmouth and mother, Dorothy W. Carr formerly of West Virginia. He is survived by daughters, Chessney A. Barrick of Virginia Beach and Kymberly Barrick; sons, Jamie Barrick and Rivers Barrick; brother and sister-in-law, John D.W. and Wendy C. Barrick of Poquoson, Va.; sister and brothers-in-law, Jill B. and Jonathan A. Strain of Knoxville, Carroll Carr-James and Danny A. James of Bristow, Va., Diane and Jim Holmes of Florida and Robin and Lucky Fraker of Lakeland, Fla.; aunt, Inez B. Dennis of Suffolk; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jimmy's memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Pastor Taylor officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the American Cancer Association, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909. Arrangements by Cremation Options Inc.
