James Vass Obituary


James Edwin Vass Sr. HILLSIDE - James Edwin Vass Sr., 86, passed away Oct. 26, 2008, in Galax, Va. He was the son of I.G. Vass, the city manger of Waynesboro for more than 30 years. Mr. Vass graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1939 and from Fishbourne Military Academy in 1940. Mr. Vass was preceded in death by his parents, I.G. and Alice Matthews Vass and brother, Eldon Matthews Vass. He is survived by his wife, Helen Swink Vass of the home; daughter, Judith Danielian Holland of Rockville, Md.; son, James Edwin Vass Jr. of Port O' Connor, Texas; grandchildren, David Danielian Holland, Janice E. Bauder, Catherine E. Holland, Robert J.J. Holland Jr.; and a very special pet named King. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Vaughan Guynn McGrady Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Lebanon Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted by Hillsville AF&AM and military rites will be conducted by Hillsville VFW Post 1115. A guestbook is available online at www.vaughanguynnandmcgrady.com.
