Annis Jones

Annis B. Jones SMITHFIELD - Annis Barlow Jones, 100, passed away Nov. 27, 2008 in Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Isle of Wight and homemaker. Mrs. Jones graduated from Smithfield High School in 1927. She was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church and previously Bacon's Castle Baptist Church. Mrs. Jones was also an honary member of the Smithfield Women's Club. She performed volunteer work for many causes both before and after the death of her husband in 1982, most notably at the Riverside Convalescent Home in Smithfield. Many times she was older than the residents whom she assisted. She always gave tirelessly of herself to anyone in need by cooking, sewing or just lending a hand whenever needed. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Ben W. Jones Sr.; daughter, Lucy Jones Cornett; daughter-in-law, Mollie Jones; granddaughter, Sharon Lynn Jones; an infant grandson and several brothers and sisters. She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted son, Ben W. Jones Jr.; son-in-law, Merl Cornett; grandchildren, Wilson Jones and his wife Donna, Dale Jones, Robin Cornett Davis and her husband Wayne; great-grandson, Bradley Davis; great-granddaughter, DeAnna Holt; brother, W. Shepard Barlow, all of Smithfield; sister, Anna Barlow Elliott of Windsor; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2 pm in St. Luke's Memorial Park with the Rev. Joseph Talley officiating. The family will receive friends today in Colonial Funeral Home between 6 to 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Isle of Wight Christian Church, C/O Stan Turner, 17314 Jolly Circle, Windsor, VA 23487.
