Peggy Byrd Obituary

Peggy B. Byrd SUFFOLK - Peggy Brown Byrd, 70, died Jan. 19, 2009, in Hampton Roads Specialty Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Peggy was born in Gates County, North Carolina. She was predeceased by her parents, Bedford and Marietta Brown. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jack Byrd; sisters, Lois Hofler and Marjorie Hobbs and husband James; brother, Bedford H. Brown Jr. and wife Joyce; and numerous nieces and nephews. Peggy will always be remembered for her zest for life and happy, never-met-a-stranger personality that helped her win the "Miss Congeniality" award in the Miss Universe Pagent when she was "Miss North Carolina" in 1959, and which later helped her become an outstanding real estate salesperson and broker, known for her integrity and professionalism in her successful career with Chorey and Associates Realty Ltd. Peggy was an active member of Oakland Christian Church, the Legal Ladies, the Chuckatuck Bridge Club and many other civic and social organizations. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oakland Christian Church by the Rev. Mark Burns, with a visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Becky Godwin Scholarship Fund, Oakland Christian Church, 5641 Godwin Blvd., P.O. Box 2008, Suffolk, VA 23432, www.oaklandchristainchurch.com. I am very sorry to learn of Peggy's demise--she was, indeed, a most special individual with such a zest for life that it left you breathless! I had lost touch with her over the past few years, and was unaware of her illness. I know she was a treasure in your life, Jack, and her loss for you will be enormous. You have my deepest sympathy.
