Britt Burroughs Obituary

Britt Gilbert Burroughs EDENTON - Britt Gilbert Burroughs, 96, formerly of Norfolk, died Jan. 24, 2009. A charter member of Talbot Park Baptist Church in Norfolk, she was superintendent and teacher of the Beginner Department for more than 40 years and trained preschool Sunday school teachers for the Baptist General Association for Virginia during the 1950s and 60s. She sang in the choir for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club and the King's Daughters Auxiliary in Norfolk. A member of First Presbyterian Church in Edenton, she was in the Mary Leary Circle and the Adult Sunday school class. She attended East Carolina Teacher's College. Mrs. Burroughs was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Edward O. Burroughs. Surviving are her daughter, Jean (Lawrence) Matthews of Vienna, Va., and son, Gil (Barbara) Burroughs of Edenton; grandchildren, Debbie Burroughs and Rae (Jeff) Knox of Edenton and Mark (Lynn) Burroughs of Holden Beach, Kevin (Nancy) Matthews of Atlanta, Carol (Kris) Salovaara and Bruce (Robin) Matthews of New York City and Lisa (Tom) Reilly of Silver Spring, Md. There are 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Edenton, at 10 a.m. Monday. The graveside service will be at 3 p.m. on the same day in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. The family will receive friends at Evans Funerals and Cremations from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 138, Edenton, N.C. 27932.

As a former member of Talbot Park Baptist Church in Norfolk, I have fond memories of Britt, who was also my mother's very dear friend. She always had a kind word for all of the Carraway children, and later helped plan my wedding. She was a lovely lady.
