To John's family:
We send our love as we share your loss.
We will always treasure our memories of John. He brought joy and a zest for life to our docks and to our boats. His joy was contagious and all of our crews (and Lynne)adored him and looked forward to fishing with him, sitting on the porch with him and even enlisting his help and expertise, which he freely and enthusiastically shared.
John was also an important element of our Day at the Docks celebration. From the first event John was there helping us set things up and figuring how to make things work. He and Amber, his frequent mate, and her sister, Erin, would spend hours together doing the heavy lifting and handling the logistics.
But his first love was fishing and in time he became a member of the crew as he participated and enjoyed every moment on the boat - even, maybe especially, when the fishing wasn't so hot or the seas were not so good.
In the 70+ years our fleet has been operating we have rarely had a customer so engaged and so much a friend, rather than a customer.
We will miss him terribly and hope that the rest of you will continue to come to Hatteras and share fishing adventures with us.
Thank you for the tribute in the obituary. Several people have told us that they have never seen one so fine.
We are glad to know how much John has loved and was loved in return.
Our best to you all,
Ernie and Lynne

I worked as a mate on the Albatross for three years and had the privilege of fishing with John on many occasions. His compassion and love of life was a true inspiration to me and he will be remembered fondly. I would like to send my condolences to his family and friends throughout the celebration of his life with each of us.
