Stanwood Williamson Obituary

Stanwood Williamson CHESAPEAKE - Stanwood W. Williamson Jr. passed away Feb. 23, 2009, as a result of an aggressive cancer. He was a man of integrity and his passing, like his life, was dignified and peaceful. Stan was born Dec. 9, 1917, in Norfolk, to Stanwood W. Williamson and Ruth Williamson Gunter. After graduating from high school in Norfolk, he served in the U.S. Army, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 333rd Infantry during World War II. He proudly fought in the Battle of the Bulge and his family and friends have listened with great interest as he shared his experiences of World War II, focusing primarily on the wonderful people he served with and met during the war years. After the war, he attended The College of William and Mary for a few years before leaving school to begin work with the City of Norfolk in the Auditor's Office where he worked until his retirement as City Auditor in 1978. After retirement, Stan enjoyed traveling with his now deceased wife of 60 years, Faye, caring for his yard and especially keeping abreast and interacting with the world of finance. All of these interests helped to keep him young in spirit even as he aged gracefully during his 91 years with us. Stan is survived by his daughter, Carol A. Williamson of Sedona, Ariz., and his two grandchildren, Lindsay Thomas and Evan Thomas of Boulder, Colo.; as well as two special nephews and their families, Jack Wright, Norfolk and Roy Wright, Virginia Beach. A funeral will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, with the Rev. Michelle Louk officiating. The burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
