Charles Kahler Obituary

Charles M. Kahler VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles M. "Chaz" Kahler, 74, died peacefully March 1, 2009, surrounded by family after a long, brave struggle from a stroke that occurred in April 2007. Charlie was born in Baltimore to George and Lillian Kahler. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack. He is survived by his sister, Peggy (Slade) Phillips; former wife, Rosalie (Phil) Draper; and children, Mark (Mary), Kevin (Kelly), Kelli (Gary) Wadsten, and Clay (Ariane). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Landon, Shea and Nash Kahler (Mark and Mary), Kristen, Stephanie and Cole Wadsten (Kelli and Gary) and Josh Zurawski (Kevin and Kelly). Described by friends as the "World's Oldest Living Teenager," Charlie lived a life full of blessings that he was so grateful for. He would want to be remembered as a man who lived each day like it was his last and whose proudest accomplishment were his children. The self-described "Portsmouth Boy" shared both Frank Sinatra's "Ol' Blue Eyes" as well as the life theme of "I Did It My Way." Golf and shagging were among Charlie's passions in life. He was inducted into the Virginia Shaggers Hall of Fame in February 2008. Charlie will be missed by family, friends and all of his angels who cared for him at National Health Care in Garden City, S.C. All are comforted knowing that he is dancing with Jesus in the Kingdom of Heaven. A celebration of Charlie's life will be held in Portsmouth at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club Friday, April 17, at 6 p.m. All friends are invited to attend and honor Charlie. Kevin, Kelly and family
I will share a funny story with you all. Every time he checked in at Ocean Blvd. he always came over to talk to me and always made me laugh. He was one of a kind. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

How sad to read Charles passed away. I met him years ago when he lived in my neighborhood (Stonebridge Landing). He and I became friends and after he moved, we kept in touch for awhile. Wish I could have spoke with him one more time. I thought a lot of him.
May God comfort you all during this time of sorrow.

What wonderful memories of Charlie and his blue motor scooter riding around Cradock, our dancing at the teenage center and being in his wedding to Rosalie. I won't forget that red hair and that great smile.
