As a teenager, I worked with Dr. Bruno's daughter, Bridget. In a discussion one day, I asked her what her father did for a living. She told me he was an OBGYN, and that he was a wonderful doctor and a great man...how right she was!

A few years had passed since my time working with Bridget. I was working as a teacher at that time, and mentioned to our office manager that I was in need of a new doctor, as mine had recently retired. She said, "I have the most compassionate, amazing doctor. His name is Al Bruno." I said, "I worked with his daughter and heard what a good man he is."
Immediately, our bookkeeper interjected, "I've been a patient of Al Bruno's for years, he’s wonderful."

After those stellar recommendations, I chose him as my new doctor. I immediately appreciated his kind and gentle demeanor. He always took plenty of time with me and always asked me about all aspects of my life and family. I recommended him to everyone I knew. Last fall, I received a letter in the mail from Dr. Bruno, notifying me of his retirement. I was heartbroken. The closing remarks of his letter expressed the warmth that captured his essence. He said, "In your life, if obstacles should present, I wish you the strength and courage to surpass them.” I'll miss his sense of humor, his fantastic smile, and his parting words, “Take care, kiddo, see you next time.”

I send my prayers and best wishes to the entire Bruno family, his colleagues, his patients, and to anyone fortunate enough to have been in his presence.

With affection and remembrance,

Susan Lawson

I would like to express the deep sadness that is felt by the loss of your love one by those that worked with him at Tidewater Physician's for Women. Dr. Bruno was apart of "our" TPW family and he will be deeply missed by us. He would come into the office always humming and it just would bring a smile to our faces. You knew he was there sometimes before you actually saw him. We were so fortunate to have had the pleasure to work with him. It does not seem possible that we will not get to see him again but we can look forward to seeing him in heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you at this time of loss.

I have been a patient of Dr. Bruno's my entire adult life. He delivered one of my children 17 years ago and I trusted his guidance with my health for some 25 years. I was very fond of him and appreciated his sense of humor. I felt lost when he retired last year. I was very saddened to learn at church that he had passed. I was used to seeing him in the choir. May he rest in peace.

We only had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Bruno once. However, in the past week many, many people have come forward to say they were either delivered by Dr. B or know someone who was.

His legacy is a living one.

We wish his family only the best during this difficult time.

Dr. Bruno was known for many things around Sentara Leigh's LDRP. One of the most enjoyable was his generosity with Sunday morning doughnuts. His happy whistling was contagious! He was already missed when he stopped doing deliveries, now he will be forever misses yet always remembered. May his family hold close to the Lord in this sad time!

Dr. Bruno was my physician for thirty five years. He delivered my daughter and as an adult my daughter was his patient. I will never forget my last visit to his office before he retired. He embraced me as if it were the last time we would see each other. Dr. Bruno was one of a kind and will truly be missed.
