Willie Smith Obituary

Willie M. Smith Jr. NORFOLK - Willie M. "Smitty" Smith Jr., 61, of the 900 block of Oaklawn Ave., passed away Aug. 25, 2009. He was born Nov. 19, 1947, to the late Emaline Chancey and Willie M. Smith Sr. in Norfolk. Willie was educated in St. Joseph Catholic School and Norfolk Catholic High School. He was a member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. Willie retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service and was employed with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a police officer for six years. He recently retired from Avis Car Rental after 10 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Aida E. Smith; five daughters, Heather D. Rhodes (Roger), Letticia A. Smith, Abigail Pacheco, Angelica Pacheco and Ashley Colon; one son, Heriberto Colon; one sister, Denise Mourning; four grandchildren, Nathaniel Rhodes, Alexander Rhodes, ZaMiyah Crenshaw and Jaylen Hughes; a nephew, Ayinde Mouning; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 232 Chapel St. Family and friends will assemble at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby St. Chapel, one hour prior to service for the procession to the church. Thank You to everybody that remember Smitty. He was sweet man, my best friend,my husband my everything and me and the kids going to miss him.In this moment of so much pain how you said goodbye to somebody like him. He leave make in everybody he touch. This is not goodbye but I see you later.

During Smitty's tenure as a police officer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard I was his Watch Commander for the entire time and I am saddened to hear of his home going. I would like to extend my condolences to the family and stay strong.

I only knew Willie from high school but was always impressed with what a fine individual he was in so many ways. I know that his passing will be felt deeply by his loved ones.
