Eugene Walters

Eugene Walters VIRGINIA BEACH - Eugene "Gene" Walters, 86, of the 2000 block of Thomas Bishop Lane, passed away Nov. 4, 2009, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. A native of Vincennes, Ind., he was the son of the late Rumold and Marie Walters. Gene was the CEO emeritus of the Farm Fresh supermarket chain. He was president of the National Grocers Association and was on the board of directors of the Food Marketing Institute. He was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, served on the board of directors of SunTrust Bank and the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University. Gene is survived by his wife of 65 years, Juanita Walters; his two daughters, Barbara Walters Doehrman and husband Steven of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Linda Walters Croker and husband Thomas of Alexandria, Va.; his sister, Rose Marie Mitchell of Inman, S.C.; three grandchildren, Kelly Hering and husband Alan of Oak Hill, Va., Amy Cordier and husband Alex of Rockville, Md., and Thomas Croker Jr. and wife Anne Ashley of Alexandria; and three great-grandchildren, Alan Hering Jr., Abbi Hering and Annie Hering. A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Thalia Lynn Baptist Church with Dr. Prentis McGoldrick officiating. The burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park.
