Gerald DeHaven Obituary

Gerald W. DeHaven FRANKLIN - Gerald Wesley DeHaven, 86, died Dec. 2, 2009, at his residence. A native of Martinsburg, W.Va., he was a son of the late John Wesley and Cora Parker DeHaven. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech and received his master's degree from The Medical College of Virginia. He was a former president and CEO of Southampton Memorial Hospital and past president of the Virginia Hospital Association. Gerald was an Army veteran of World War II and Korea, and was a former National Guardsman. He was a life member and former adjutant of the Charles R. Younts American Legion Post 73, a former president of the Franklin Rotary Club, and a member of High Street United Methodist Church. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Ruth Porterfield DeHaven; one daughter, Brenda D. Ashburn (Willie) of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Rosalyn A. Williamson (Romeo) of Virginia Beach, Andrew Ashburn (Amanda) of Saipan, and Melissa Ashburn of Florida; and two brothers, Leon DeHaven (Betty) of Fort Myers, Fla., and Douglas DeHaven (Joan) of Winchester. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Susan Reaves and the Rev. Edward Johnson officiating. Interment will be Monday at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and suggests that memorials be made to High Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Aunt Ruth,

I was so sorry to hear about Uncle Jerry passing away. I always remember him as the "cool Hip" uncle. He could always make me laugh. I never felt like a stupid kid around him...you either for that matter. All the memories I have of the both of you are happy ones...I'll always remember Uncle Jerry telling his crazy jokes and all of us laughing. He will be missed, but he will always be smiling in our hearts.
