Willis Clarke Obituary

Willis Stephen Clarke VIRGINIA BEACH - On Oct. 12, 2010, the world lost an amazing person. Willis Stephen Clarke died suddenly after an attack of acute pancreatitis. He was surrounded by his family and friends. In the words of a dear friend, "Willis had a seemingly magical ability to bring people together. He didn't make friends; he made family." He was 28 years old. A natural athlete, between the ages of 12 and 17 Willis spent his summers swimming with the Holmes Run Acres Hurricanes in Falls Church, Va., where he excelled at the butterfly and leading his team in cheers. Willis was a 2000 graduate of Princess Anne High School, Virginia Beach, where he was active in the Color Guard. He went on to participate on several national competitive color guard teams. He was employed by GEICO until shortly before his death. Although ill, he spent the last few months reconnecting with his inner child and teaching himself how to indulge in the small pleasures of life like video games, photography, music, and pressed coffee. Willis was preceded in death by his mother, Robin Barnes Clarke. He is survived by his father, Willis Mackey Clarke; his stepmother, Linda Clarke; his stepsister, Teresa Robinette; and his sister, Reva. He is mourned by his many, many friends, his partner, Justin Ludwick, his aunts, Addie Stubbs and Brenda Mantz, and his Uncle John who taught Willis how to drive a stick shift. A celebration of Willis' life will be held at Calvary Chapel of Virginia Beach, 5228 Indian River Road, behind Kramer Tire Center at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16. "Grief," by Mark Klein, written for Willis Clarke: "This cry is the sound of a heart being torn in two. This rumbling in my chest is the world coming undone. We now collect our memories carefully in anthologies. We record those words as though divine. Because of these we are changed forever. The forests are on fire; they burn to the ground. Everything is broken to be restored, new."

Willis lived and was loved by me, his aunt, for ten thousand four hundred and ninety-six days. In that time I never knew him to harm any living creature or to act selfishly or to even raise his voice to me. His cheerfulness and generosity was acknowledged by all who had the privilege to call him friend. My dear nephew's life was not long nor was it easy but it, and he, was unforgettable.

I had the pleasure of training Willis at GEICO. He always had a smile and warm greeting. I enjoyed keeping up with Willis over time. More than once I was able to enjoy his photography. Although our conversations were brief, they were always enriching and I will miss him.

Willis was like my brother. I'll never forget the joy he brought to my life, or the way the room lit up when he walked into it.

Willis was in my 8th grade Math class at Indian River Middle, it seems like yesterday. He was HILARIOUS! He and I always joked around and had so much fun talking. He was a sweetheart and I am so very sad to hear about this. What a loss!

To Willis's family and partner, my sincerest and deepest condolences. He was a beautiful person, inside and out. He was the first friend I made when I moved to VA, so kind and loving. He cast a light that will shine on long after we ourselves are gone.

Willis was a wonderful person. I remember the first time I met him at GC Services over 9 years ago. He was so full of charisma, he could easily light up a room. Later when I left GC to move to GEICO there was one person who I wanted to make the transition with me and my friend Lori and that was Willis. It took nearly a year to convince him to come to GEICO but I am so glad he did. I will miss him dearly he was a great friend. My life is better for knowing him and he will live on forever in my memories.

I have a dent in my ceiling that Willis and my daughter Megan swore was not caused by tossing flags in the family room. I have never painted over the marks because they remind me of the exuberance that they shared for color guard and performing and being the best.

When Willis came over, everyone knew it. He was intense and driven and charming. He could wear you out in 2 sentences because he put so much emotion into it.

I am sorry that I didn't know he was sick and I am heartbroken that he is gone.

Willis is one of a kind.

What a sad day, the loss of a true giving spirit. I met Willis through my children at Princess Anne in marching band. Willis was either smiling or causing laughter despite the trials of life. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends, may he live forever in your hearts.

Willis was such an amazing guy. We worked together at GC Services for 2 years and he was simply fabulous. We had become friends while working there and I will never forget his charisma or spunk. He is already terribly missed.

I met Willis when he moved into the apartment across from me. I was moving a chaise lounge and he readily came to help me carry it even though he hadn't even met me. This was the kind of person that he was...always ready to help. We became great friends and he could always make you laugh and was always there to listen. I will truly miss him and his sweet spirit. He really loved his friends. My heart goes out to Justin who you could hear from the start that they had something special and Willis just lit up when he talked about him. Mark, Michelle, and Chanssee were very special to him and you could just feel that they all had a special connection. I am proud to have been able to call Willis my friend and was privileged to have known him. I will miss him and the world is a little less bright without him in it.

My sweetheart, my love. I love you so so much and I will miss you everyday of my life. It's hard to go on without you here beside me, and I don't know how I can make it through every day without your life and energy. I miss you sweetie, and I love you the most!

Not so long ago...and the way many remember him.
