Virginia Van Zandt Obituary

Virginia Van Zandt
of Binghamton
Virginia Van Zandt, 61, of Binghamton, N.Y., went unexpectedly to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 6, 2008. Virginia was predeceased by her father, Miguel Pla; and her stepfather, Paul Coulson. Virginia is survived by her mother, Elenora Coulson, Binghamton, N.Y.; her sons, Adam and Lucas Van Zandt, Berlin, Conn.; and her daughter, Amanda Quinn and husband, Wayne, Paoli, Pa. Virginia is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Virginia Isakson Van Zandt, Foster Van Zandt Freudberg, Riley Van Zandt and Brayden Quinn. Virginia is also survived by her siblings, Fidencia Pla and her husband, Thomas Waxenfelter, Thomas Coulson, Timothy Coulson, his wife, Deborah, and their son, Christopher. Virginia was born September 14, 1946 in N.Y., N.Y. and grew up in Long Island. Virginia graduated from A.G. Berner H.S., Massapequa, N.Y., Class of 1964. On February 6, 1965, she married Peter Van Zandt, who was enlisted in the U.S. Army. Virginia started her family in Okinawa, Japan, where Peter was stationed. After Peter's discharge and the completion of his education, the family settled in Binghamton, N.Y. Virginia subsequently worked as a clerk in the Broome County Clerks Office for over 25 years, where she was recently promoted to Chief Index Clerk. Virginia had many loves and interests including the R.I. shore, antiquing, jewelry, year round Christmas shopping (everybody received a gift), and most of all her husband, Peter, her children and her beloved grandchildren. Virginia was greatly loved and admired, and her generous, vibrant spirit will be dearly missed by her family, friends and acquaintances.
A private funeral service for Virginia will be held at the convenience of the family. On Thursday, July 10, 2008, the family will receive friends for a celebration of Virginia's life from 6-8 p.m. at the Grand Royale Hotel, 80 State St., Binghamton, N.Y. Beautiful lady, beautiful life
Proud loving mother, adoring wife
Small in stature - tall in our eyes
Delicate at first glance, but strength underlies

A pleasure to work with,
A friend who shared with all
Kindly listening to our concerns
No matter how small

Unselfish caring daughter
Whose time cheerfully spent
Brought relief, happiness and love to her mother
To the greatest extent

Delightful laughter, she brightened our days
Dressed to the nines
Everyone looked her way

We will miss you, Ginny
Beautiful laddy, beautiful life

Lucas, Adam and Amanda,

Your parents always made me feel so welcome at your house growing up -- whether we were just hanging out in the kitchen talking to your mom or watching football in the living room with your dad. All I remember are great times -- good conversation, lots of laughing and your mom's tasty meatloaf. I'll always cherish those memories.

Today I was thinking about how your mom used to drive us all over the place in that blue minivan during our early years at SCC and your dad taking all those pictures of our football games. They were great people whose love for you was always obvious.

I wish I could have been there Thursday to see you. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

And Lucas, I miss you, bud. Stay strong.

Dear Mrs. Coulson, Fidencia and Tom,

My regrets that I cannot attend the memorial service this evening. My heart goes out to you at this sad time. Ginny was a wonderful person and I always looked forward to chatting with her and catching up on family news as she poked around my antique store for all of those special treasures that she bought for everyone. My daughter Abby also sends her condolences--she thought Ginny was the most "hip" lady she had ever met and Ginny was a big help to her at the clerks office during her summer job at a legal firm. We will miss her beautiful smile and her great sense of humor. Please extend my deepest sympathy to Ginny's children and grandchildren--I feel as if I know them from my chats with her and from all of their pictures. God bless her she was a great lady.

Ginny was an integral part of our (Co. Clerk's) office with over 20 years of experience and a very special person who was loved by everyone who knew her glowing smile, flashy clothes and one-of-a-kind shoes. There’s no question that she will be immensely missed by her friends, family and co-workers.

Our office will not be the same without Ginny, but she will always remain a part of our family and we will always remember the heartfelt support that we received as a part of her extended family.

Jinny, my friend. I will miss you terribly. You were such a positive role model. All your little presents through the years have become even more dear. I will cherish them always, and cherish the fun times at the cottage, shopping and just chatting. As one of the "Lunch Bunch" your absence will be sorely missed. And the First Friday Art Walk will not be the same without you. Thank you for years of friendship. I know I will see you again someday......make room for me up there.

My deepest sympathies to the Van Zandt family. Over the years I had the good fortune to know Virginia through the Broome County Clerk's Office. One thing I know was very important to her was her family- which she spoke of all the time. I would hear her talk of her mother, children and grandchildren and she loved them all. I would also regularly see her brother Tom visit her at the Clerks and I was always impressed at the bond they seemed to share. You were all never far from her thoughts. May the strength of your family ties help you through this difficult time.

Dear Van Zandt Family,

I met your mother Ginny while on a business trip. I was conducting a training class at the Broome County Clerk's Office. Her smile brightened up the room and placed everyone at ease. During a break in the training session I mentioned that I had seeen some antique stores along Clinton Street and could not help but notice how early they had closed. Ginny wanted to know if there was anything in particular that I wanted. I mentioned that as a young girl my dream was to own a Thumbelina doll. However, my parents could not afford to buy the doll for me, so as an adult, I was looking to purchase my childhood wish. That same afternoon, Ginny informed me that she had checked with all the stores and one store had one in stock but it was on lay-away for Christmas. I was disappointed but Ginny said "don't give up yet, we'll find you a Thumbelina doll". Well, Ginny was right, several months later, during another training class in Albany, I received an emergency phone call. That phone call was from Ginny Van Zandt, she had found an original Thumbelina doll from the 1960's and it was still in working condition. I was elated. I was so touched that someone I had only met on one occassion took the time to help me fulfill my childhood wish. I knew Ginny was extra special and have kept her letter informing me that Thumbelina was on her way for the past 11 years. I was blessed to have met her and will always remember her fondly. May God look over you and your family during this difficult time.
