Monmouth, Ill.
Leatha A. Irey, formerly of Monmouth, Ill., passed away peacefully at Castle Gardens, Vestal, N.Y., on September 11. She was the daughter of the late Samuel A. and Martha (Standusky) Handley, Bennett, Iowa. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Capt. Robert G. Irey (Ret.); three sisters, Mabel (Jack) Jacobson, Agness (Rueben) Johnson, Ethel (James) Flickinger; niece, Ruth (Kent) Bone. Leatha is survived by loving and caring niece, Karenlea Kretsch, Owego, N.Y.; great-niece, Pamela (Robert) Pringle; and great-great-niece, Lauren Pringle, Apalachin, N.Y., who spent many fun-filled hours, right up to the end, with Leatha. She is also survived by nieces, Beulah (Lou) Schier, Brownsburg, Ind., Grace (Novie) Waddel, Sullivan, Ill.; and nephew, Kent Bone, Sullivan, Ill.; and numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was loved by many extended family and friends. Leatha worked in the corporate world before her marriage and helped run the Irey Brothers Construction Company, Monmouth, Ill. She was a member of the Owego Susquehanna Sweethearts Red Hat Chapter. She was a pioneer for Women's Rights in Education, Equality and Work. Leatha loved Christmas, crossword puzzles, cook books, shopping and traveling. We love her and will miss her dearly.
A special thanks to Ellen Wood and staff at Castle Gardens, Keepsake Village for their outstanding care and compassion. A graveside memorial service will be held in Bennett, Iowa, at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made to Owego Business and Professional Women, c/o Women's Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 444, Owego, N.Y. Cremation by Fischer-Scholder Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Chenango St., Binghamton, N.Y.
