George Solyak
of Binghamton
George Solyak, 91, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at the Susquehanna Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Suzanna Solyak; and his two sisters, Anna Kukol and Mary Ayres. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Anna Solyak; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda A. and Gordon P. Hanson, Sun Prairie, Wis.; his son and daughter-in-law, George D. and Theresa I. Solyak, Lititz, Pa.; four grandchildren, Andrea G. Eberz, Kyle Solyak, Greg Solyak, and Scott Solyak; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a member of Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church, and belonged to its Holy Name Society and the Greek Catholic Union Lodge #47. George was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service with over 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and served with the 907 Signal Corps in the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 1254 and a Lifetime Charter Member of the National WWII Memorial. George was a member of the Elks Lodge 852, the Woodrow Wilson Alumni Association, and a 60-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Bednarsky Funeral Home, Inc., 96 Glenwood Ave., Binghamton, and at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church, 360 Clinton St., Binghamton, where a Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by the Rev. John J. Cigan. Burial will be in Holy Spirit Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., where Parastas will be held at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church.
