George R. "Uncle George" Marcotte

George Marcotte Obituary

MARCOTTE, GEORGE R. 'UNCLE GEORGE' 74, of Grove Avenue, Cranston, died peacefully at home Wednesday, Aug 13, 2008 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. George was surrounded by his loving family and friends at the time of his death.

Born in Coventry, he was the son of the late H. George and Mary (Dolan) Marcotte. He was the brother of the late Ernest P. Marcotte.

George is survived by his loving wife of 29 years Margaret (Cummings) Marcotte and his daughter, Elizabeth A. Marcotte. He also leaves a sister Janet (Marcotte) Hopkins and a large extended family of brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

George worked in the composing room of the Providence Journal for 36 years, retiring in 1996. He was a partner in the Auntie Margaret's 'M and M' Daycare for the past 25 years. He leaves a lasting impression of laughter, patience and love on all who knew him, especially the many children he and his wife cared for in the daycare.

His dedication to service and community and his strong sense of faith were evident by his involvement in St. Matthew Church in Cranston where he was an lecturn and adult altar server. Known for his kindness and compassion, he also volunteered at Insight Radio, reading the Sunday paper to the visually impaired for 18 years.

George was a past Grand Knight of Gibson Council of the Knights of Columbus and was also a member of the Ceildhe Club in Cranston. As a life-long Boston Red Sox fan, George's support for the Sox never wavered over the years. A historian at heart, George also had a passion for local and national politics and history. He shared his knowledge and enthusiasm for these interests with family and friends and was a member of Clean Government.

His funeral will be held on Monday at 7:45am from The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Matthews Church Cranston at 9:00am. Burial with Military Honors will be in The Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery Exeter. Visitation is TODAY, SUNDAY 4 to 8.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's memory to St. Matthew Church Renovation Fund and Home and Hospice Care of RI.

Margaret and Elizabeth: We just learned of George's passing, and were quite shocked and saddened! He was truly a special, gentle man and he will be missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him. Although it has been many years since we last saw "Uncle George", his memories are fresh in our minds. We will never forget his annual appearance as Santa @ the Childrens' Christmas Party @ Auntie Margaret's. Brittany (and we) have many fond memories of her years @ Aunty Margaret's School of Manners and Memories :-) Our sympathies and prayers go out to you at this difficult time. Hi Margaret and Elizabeth

I will always remember George as a person who truly enjoyed a good time and a great laugh!

He certainly had a special relationship with me and the rest of his extended Cummings family, being a "proud" card carrying 2nd degree member of the Order of the Moose and the special honour of the "Keeper of the Horns" for his fellow Moosehornians in Rhode Island!

I'll always remember that time on the river when we celebrated George & Margaret's 25th wedding anniversary!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

The George I know was one of the nicest people I have ever met in my lifetime. It was truley an honor to have known such a remarkable person as he was. He leaves this world with such an impression on anyone who has ever known him. A gentle man with a hugh heart that was always ready to give and never expect anything in return. That was someone we all could learn a leson from and God knows George you have impacted many lives. Now that you go to be with our heavenly Father above we know there is a special place there for you to. No more suffering, no more pain ,may you now rest in peace. Margaret and Elizabeth I am so sorry for the loss of George. He will be missed by all who knew him.
