William Forsstrom Obituary
Born June 22, 1920 in Colon, Republic of Panama, he was the son of the late Capt. Albin B. Forsstrom (Canal Pilot) and Jessie R. (Berry) Forsstrom.
Bill graduated from Cristobal High School, Panama Canal Zone, in 1938 and then attended R.I. State College (URI), where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. While at URI, he earned 2 letters in Track and won the New England broad jump event in 1941. In 1943, he joined the Seabees in the Canal Zone, and was stationed in Davisville and Endicott with the 69th Battalion. He was at Seabee Camp in Joliet, IL when the war ended.
Bill was employed for many years as a Specifications Writer at the former Leesona Corporation, and then at Kenney Manufacturing, retiring in 1985.
Bill was a member of the Panama Canal Society of Florida. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of Overseas Lodge #40, and a long-time member of the North Kingstown Municipal Golf Course.
He was the loving father of W. Peter Forsstrom (WFD retired) and his wife Sharon (Whorf) of Foster, Barbara Emmons and her husband Craig of Warwick, Joanne Smith and her husband David of Saco, ME, and Nancy Morrow and her husband Brian of Danielson, CT. Cherished grandfather of Peter, Michael, and Beth and great grandfather of Matthew and Ryan. He was the brother of the late Albin B. Forsstrom, Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday at 12 Noon in the First Baptist Church in America, 75 North Main Street, Providence. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday 6-8 pm in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Greenwood, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95). Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to the WW II Memorial Commission of RI, 408 Broadway, Providence, RI 02909 or VNA Hospice of Care New England, 51 Health Ln., Warwick, RI 02886 would be appreciated. www.murphyfuneralhomes.org
