Metta was the daughter of the late Adolph and Pauline (Kroger) Cereska, born on Sept. 30, 1915, in Gladwin. Metta was born into a large family and was the youngest of nine children. Metta entered into marriage with Theodore E. Surprenant on May 24, 1934, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Mt. Clemens.
Metta and Ted made their home in Mt. Clemens, and after several years working in retail and expanding upon her love for people, Metta and Ted retired to Glen Lake. Together they owned and operated Shadowoods Cottages on Big Glen Lake. Over the years Metta and her husband developed many wonderful friendships and lasting memories with those that had the pleasure to stay at the cottages. Eventually the cottages were sold and Metta and Ted headed for warmer weather, later returning to Traverse City.
Metta was talented and expressed herself playing the piano and organ, or through one of the many projects or crafts she always had going. She will be deeply missed for her ability to bond with people and by those who had the pleasure to be in her company.
Metta is survived by her three sons, Theodore (Patricia) Surprenant of Sterling Heights, Gerald (Marjorie) Surprenant of Alabama and James (Sally) Surprenant of Traverse City; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and many other loving family members and friends.
Metta was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; two sisters; and her husband, Ted, in December of 2003.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Those wishing to honor Metta may do so with a random act of kindness or by directing memorial contributions to the Father Fred Foundation.
The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City; www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com

I know Grandma is now resting peacefully with Grandpa. I will forever remember all the good times we had up at the cottages. I will always remember everything that they have taught me and inspired me to be, Loving, Helpfull, Honest and most important Hard Working. I will always miss them both.

I regret that I never met her. I have always heard how sharply she recalled her life and I would have loved to hear her story. My thoughts are with all who knew her.
