Bob graduated from Hannah St. Mary High School. Right after graduation, he went to work for D & L Contracting in Traverse City. He worked his way up to vice president of that company.
In 1983, Bob stared his own business, Schmuckal Concrete. He was his only employee for a few years. With an old pickup truck and a few concrete forms, he began what was a very successful concrete business for the next 26 years. The company grew rapidly and his brother Ken became his partner, employing up to 20 seasonal employees. Bob took a lot of pride in his work and became well-known throughout northern Michigan.
Bob was a proud member of the American Military League, VFW Men's Auxiliary, and a very dedicated member and volunteer of the Interlochen Eagles for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Monica, and their children and grandchildren; his stepfather, Jacob Kolarik; his brothers, Thomas (Denise) Schmuckal and Kenneth Schmuckal; his sons, Doug and Tim Rice; and his many aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout the United States. Bob will be sorely missed by the many friends and businessmen he met during his life.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, with visitation one hour prior at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
Memorial donations can be directed to the family of Robert Schmuckal.
The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City; www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com

We are so sorry about your loss and ours. Bob was a funny man and will be missed a lot. We are also sorry we did not make it yesturday but we heard the turn out was unbealivable. The story that I love to tell about Bob is when we took our kids to the Buckley Bar for the famous dinners, years ago, the Reilly or McKenzie had just lost their first tooth and said look Mr. Bob I lost my tooth, Bob then pulled out all of his teeth and said he did too. The look on the kids face was to funny, and Jamey and I just didn't know what to do, we all laughed. I will miss my friend and still can't beleave I will never see him again, my heart hurts. God Bless you all and if anyone needs anything please feel free to contact us.

So long Bob. It was a pleasure to know you. We go back to around 1978 and while our associations were few threwout the years those memories were always fond. Has it been ten years since you brought me on your stage in Buckley to sing karokee on a fun New Years Eve? Your choice of song was "My Way" perhaps Paul Anka, the noted song writer was thinking of you too when he penned it for Frank Sinatra. You sang it well, my friend. We had a great evening then , enjoying it with Bruce and Renee, and George and Mary Ann Vasbinder of California. You left your personal stamp through your work as well as your personality. It was truly, "Your Way" that we loved. You will be missed by us all.

Bob was not just a fun and games guy, but a genuine friend and gentleman to all he met. We had lots of shirt competitions over the years be it at Dannys in the middle of January or the campgrounds in July. Have to admit he won most the time but we all know he would give anyone in need that shirt off his back anywhere, anytime. Miss Ya Bob, Amy & Mike Grow

There is no words to let you all know what a good friend and employer that Bob was! The crew worked hard and played hard but the good time will alway be present in our hearts. The Schmuckal family will always be a part of our family over the years we have been through hard times with loss of family members and crew members but Schmuckal Concrete will live on forever. I hope that if there is any thing that the Leach family can do to make things easier at this time please call. Our prayers and thought are with you at this time. I know that there are no words that can make it better but time will ease the heart break that we all feeling now.

My deepest sympathy to your family in this time of sorrow. The last time I saw Bob was at the truck show in Buckley this summer. We had quite a chat about the "good old days" and the good times we had at D&L. I will miss him.

We would like to send you our prayers at this difficult time. Bob will be missed by so many. He always brought a tear to our eyes. Usually it was a tear of laughter now a tear of sadness. We can see him now in his hawaiian shirt cruising the heavens in his golf cart. We are here if there is anything you need.

Dear Bob, my heart was broken when I heard. I tried to call you about 6 weeks ago to tell you how much it meant to me for you being my friend and helping me out. You were the most craziest and funniest man I ever met. You would do anything for anybody you had a heart of Gold. Thank you for washing my glaases at work even though you always made a big mess behind the bar. Bob you touched a part of my soul and you will never be forgotton. My dear friend rest in peace. You played hard in this life time. Heaven better watch out. Love and miss you forever Kimmy.

So sorry to hear your loss. Having known Bob and you three for over 20 years it won't be the same for all his family and friends but we will always remember him and his kindness and willing to go that extra mile. I haven't seen Bob in a long time and I heard the news on WTCM's satalite radio news while working in West Virginia. Last time I saw him was at the AML and I cannot count all the times I would see him driving his company truck and we'd always wave or honk as we passed each other any where in the county. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. Let it be known that Vicki and I are thinking of you three during these hard times. You three have so many friends and family that I'm sure that it will be a comfort for you as the days go by. I will be thinking of him this coming week while we'll be in Hawaii as I know he enjoyed it there a lot in the past. I hope to see you later this month when I come home for a couple of days from West Virginia. Take care.

Monica & all the family:
Bob will be greatly missed by all the friends and family that he has touched throughout his life. For someone to wear that bright hawaiian shirt, checkered pants and those gold chains, He for surely pulled it off well! Seeing Bob always put a smile on my face. You have always been a good hearted person with a warm soul. No speeding on that golf cart up there!
I miss you Bob very much, you have touched us in a way that no other can. I am very pleased and honored to have had you as a great friend!
