Iras Shivers Obituary

Iras Mae Shivers, 96, died Friday, November 7, 2008, in Nashville, Tenn. Iras was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jesse Edwin Shivers. They were married 65 years. She is survived by her two sons, Harold Edwin Shivers, of Houston, Texas, and Ralph David Shivers (Harriette), of Nashville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One granddaughter predeceased her. Iras was born in Crockett County, Tennessee on April 28, 1912. Two brothers and three sisters predeceased her. She attended David Lipscomb College and became a school teacher in Crockett County. After her marriage, she devoted her life to rearing two sons and and supporting her husband in his work. Iras and Edwin made their home in Clarksville, Tennessee for 28 years. After his retirement, they moved back to Crockett County. Later, they lived in Roanoke, Virginia for 18 years to be near their son and grandchildren. Iras' passion was teaching Sunday school and working with community clubs. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Burial Park, in Roanoke, Va., on Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions to honor Iras Shivers be made to Evan Shivers Christian Camp Fund, c/o Roanoke Church of Christ, 2606 Brandon Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24015. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.
