L. Kilmer Obituary

Retired Boy Scout Executive L. Robert Kilmer (Bob), a retired Boy Scouts of America Executive, died in Sarasota, Florida, on November 20, 2008. A native of Detroit, Michigan and an Eagle Scout, Mr. Kilmer attended Wayne State University. He entered the Scouting profession in 1944 as an Assistant District Executive in Detroit and served that council as a District Executive, Assistant Director of Field Service, Director of Activities, Director of Field Service and Deputy Scout Executive until December 1960. In January 1961 he became Scout Executive in St. Paul, Minnesota and after five successful years was promoted to the Scout Executive position in Baltimore, Maryland. In May 1972 he became Director of Support Service in the East Central Region. In January 1974 was appointed as the Regional Director of the East Central Region in Oak Brook, Illinois responsible for 78 Local Councils in six states. After more than four years later, he became Scout Executive in Miami, Florida resolving internal organizational and financial problems in that council. Serious back problems made it necessary to leave the profession and he retired after 41 years as a Career Scouter. Mr. Kilmer has been active in civic affairs in each community in which he lived, including Rotary, the United Way, along with active participation in the Episcopal Church. A memorial service will be held on December 13, 2008, at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21210 where he was a former member. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Kilmer's name to the Church. Beloved husband of the late Helen Mickey Kilmer and brother of the late James Kilmer. Devoted father to Nancy Marsiglia, and significant partner Gregory Leyko of Parkton, Maryland, and son Dr. David Kilmer and his wife, Susan of Roanoke, Va. Dear grandfather of Robert, Bradley and Bryan Marsiglia and Julia Kilmer and as well as four great-grandchildren.

Juanita joins me in sending our sincere condolences on the passing of your dad. Bob was a wonderful friend, a great traveling companion on our overseas trips, and a talented and resourceful scouter during his active scouting days. He will add his our brand of humor at the pearly gates.
