David Journell Obituary

David Lee Journell, 60, formerly of Narrows, Va., and now of Princeton, W.Va., departed this life on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2009, at his home in the loving care of his family, after a long battle with lymphoma. Born in Giles County, Va., on August 21, 1948, he was a son of the late Buford Ray and Minnie Mae Pruett Journell. He had been employed at Hardee's in Princeton as a cook where he made many wonderful friends who will greatly miss him. He had endeared himself to his three brothers and three sisters through the years and they will miss the countless ways he shared his love with them. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He leaves to cherish his memory his three brothers and sisters-in-law, Earnest Henry and Alice Journell, of Pearisburg, Harvey Ray and Barbara Journell, of Christiansburg, and J.B. and Sandy Journell, of Narrows; his three sisters and brothers-inlaw, Mildred E. Morris, of Edgemere, Md., Vickie and Donald McCroskey, of Pembroke, and Carole and Frankie Atkins, of Pearisburg; seven nieces; four nephews; his wonderful landlord, Kenny Lilly; his neighbors, Drema Cox and Bonnie Hunt; all his buddies at Hardee's; and his beloved cat, Pebbles, who will sadly miss him. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, Va., on Friday evening, February 6, 2009, from 5 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Shahn Wilburn and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2009, in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family would like to thank the hospice nurses for making him comfortable in his last days; also Dr. Rowena Chambers and her staff; the nurses on the Fourth Floor at Princeton Community Hospital and the Oncology Department. DAVID WAS AN EXCELLENT COOK AT HARDEE'S. HE KEPT EVERYTHING SPOTLESS EVEN THOUGH HE CALLED ME THE DRILL SARGENT, WE STILL HAD A LOT OF LAUGHS EVEN THOUGH WE WORKED HARD. HE HAD A MISCHIEVOUS SMILE . YOU NEVER KNEW WHETHER HE WAS SERIOUS OR PLAYING A JOKE ON SOMEONE. THE VISITS AT PCH WERE SHORT BUT I ENJOYED GOING BY JUST TO SAY HELLO. HE WILL BE MISSED GREATLY BY ALL. HOPE TO SEE YOU IN HEAVEN ONE DAY.

To Davids Family:
I worked with David many years ago in Narrows and he and I became really good friends. I have lived in NC for 20 years and when I would go home I always gave him a call and we would talk for hours. He was such a wonderful person and I know that your hearts are breaking but he is in a better place. Remember all the good times and all the hours of love and laughter he brought to you. I know that he is watching down from Heaven and smiling that wonderful smile he had. God bless all of you for making his life so much more wonderful and be reassured that he is at peace now. David dear friend, I will miss you!

I knew David when he was a cook ( a really good one ) at the Narrows Truck Stop ( when it was just that) I recall David often standing near the slot where orders were placed for the waitresses to pick up, ears cocked and listening to the non-sensical conversation coming from out front. Many times he would state it thusly: "I heard the truth not just once today...but twice. Amazing ! ! " And it truly was. I'll miss David...

David you were one of our dearest friends we ever had. We will miss you so so very much. We will always share the memories we had sitting on your patio outside drinking coffee and talking to the wee hours of the night. Its so hard to let you go but we know now THERE IS NO MORE PAIN.
