Jerry Jenkins Obituary

Jerry Wayne Jenkins, 63, of New Castle, Virginia, beloved father, grandfather, cousin and friend, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009 at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro, N.C. Jerry's valiant fight for recovery began after he sustained multiple injuries suffered in an automobile accident on March 12, 2009 in Craig County, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his father, Bennett Jenkins, his mother Lottie Simmons Jenkins and his "second mother", Dorothy (Dot) Throckmartin. He is survived by his daughters, Angela Dean and Christine Bennett and husband Robin; his granddaughters, Kassondra and Alixandra Dean; his cousin, whom he loved as his sister, Brenda Throckmartin Conner and husband Bob; his cousin, Mike Jenkins and wife Rose; special "sons" Mike Hudson and Dennis Schoonover; special friends, Al Baughman, Herbie Blackwood, Harvey Bulaski, Alvin Gillespie, Jack Jackson, Ray Miller, and Ron Turner; other cousins and many other loving friends too numerous to name. Born August 26, 1945 in Roanoke, Virginia, Jerry was a graduate of William Fleming High School. Jerry was an avid sportsman and conservationist. He loved to compete in shooting matches of any kind and won countless trophies and awards for his expert marksmanship, but he was happiest when he was teaching others (especially his family and friends) how to master the art of safe gun handling and wildlife management. He loved to hunt and taught many others hunting skills which will be passed on to future generations. He was a staunch advocate of the Hunters for the Hungry program. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club where he was instrumental in developing the club's Hunter Education program. In 1995, he was named the Hunter Educator of the Year by the Virginia Wildlife Federation, and attended a banquet in Richmond, Virginia to receive this honor. This recognition was given to him "
For volunteer service to the people of the Roanoke Valley area, as coordinator of Hunter Education, organizing the area's programs and personally providing 1374 people a total of 1410 hours of training. He completed advanced courses, for self-qualification, in Ethics, Wildlife Management, First Aid, Survival, Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, Muzzleloading, Bowhunting and Trapping. Many people in the Roanoke Valley area are better citizens in the woods and fields because of his service to them and to wildlife."
Jerry continued to train people in hunting and gun safety as well as wildlife management and conservation until his untimely death.
Jerry will be greatly missed by his family and friends including those with whom he worked at AKZO Nobel (Reliance Universal) for 40 years. He was loved by many and was a friend to those who met him.
He held a very special place in his heart for his "grandbabies", Kassi and Ali. As he valued the teachings and culture of the Cherokee Nation, he passed along his knowledge to the girls and bestowed upon them his special names. The following were written for him by them and were read to him before his passing Friday afternoon.
You were supposed to come home, but we didn't expect it to be so soon. All your struggles and hard work have finally paid off, you're home. We are glad you have made it home and you are safe with us. No, you did not come home to be with us, you have been taken to another home. You are in the home at which we will join you in the near future. As you are home now, you will kneel before your Prince, your King of Kings, and breathe the fresh air of a new and eternal life. Yes, we will miss you here physically, but we will not worry, for we know you are home. You are safe and with us, embedded like a precious jewel in the rockbeds of our hearts. You will save my spot and you will wait for me to arrive. When I finally have the blessed opportunity to kneel before Our Maker, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and am able to roam the golden streets of Heaven, I will find you. In a beautiful garden, I will find you, with the sun shining as bright as your love, and I will take your hand and as a little girl I will match my step with yours as you lead me through new and beautiful places as you have so many times before.
I love you Granddaddy,
Little Sparrow

Christy, Brenda, and Angela also extend our heartfelt gratitude for the support, love, and continued prayers from their family, friends, co-workers, and employers. Without them, we would not have been able to do for Jerry what he needed from us over the past 15 weeks. Also, gratitude goes to the "Golden Corral Crew", the "Hunter's Den Gang", and the "Mountain Breeze Buds" for being such loyal and supportive friends of Jerry's. Thank you, Al Baughman and the Reverend Dr. Rob Colwell, for making the journey to Greensboro on Friday to be with Jerry and his family and for offering your love and support. Thank you, Mary Green, for traveling to Greensboro to be with Jerry's family as he journeyed to his eternal home. Thank you, Wanda and Jack Jackson, for being with Jerry during his last days.

So many special memories and they grow more special to me with each passing day! Your laugh and smile enters my mind often. You seem to be everywhere these days as I am reminded of you when I see a bear, deer, squirrel, Turkey, snake, butterfly, cicadas, birds, pictures of the boys fishing at the creek, sunshine and thunderstorms, and sitting in the building. In a way Im wishing you were here right now and in another way Im happy for you that you are in a sweet place with not a care in the world! I love you dearly and feel so blessed for your presence in my life, even now. Happy Fathers Day to you this Sunday. Thank you for loving me as if I were your own daughter.

Jerry,
When your Mom passed away, you were already a grown man.
She was already so very proud of "her boy".
With her watching you from above, the Heavens could not have begun to contain her pride as she watched you grow into the man you became--including a father, a granddaddy, and a friend to so many.
May you now be united with your Mother in Heaven.
God Bless and Keep You.
I'll miss you!
Love,
"Cous" Brenda

Christy, Ang, & Brenda,

Words cannot begin to say how sorry I am for your loss. Although Jerry has gone to his Heavenly home, his memories will continue to live on in the stories, teachings, and love you share with those around you. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers and you know that I am only a telephone call away if there is anything you need. I love you all!

Jerry helped me run all the shotgun matches for the rifle club for at least 12 years.I've never had so much fun!! We traveled all over the state shooting skeet, and I couldn't have had a better friend. Jerry was the brother I never had. I loved him, and I
miss him already.

To the family of Jerry Jenkins,
I first met him in 1981 when he became a Virginia Hunter Education Instructor in a class I was helping teach. I remember going to help with his first class, and when he completed giving his first instruction, he sat down next to me and exclaimed "I was so nervous and my mouth is so dry I couldn't spit on myself if I was on fire". He remained active in the program for many years and became a first class instructor. No one will ever know how many lives he saved by teaching folks how to hunt safely, but I know he touched many lives. It was an honor and privilege to have been a friend of Jerry's and he will be missed.

To Jerry's girls and "grandbabies",

Ray and I extend our sympathy to you on the untimely death of your father. I have enjoyed the stories you tell about this unique man. We all can add our own stories and special memories.

I am deeply touched by the way you all have handled Jerry's 15-week ordeal. Thank you for the time-consuming writings giving us all a peek into Jerry's struggles - never giving up when most of us would.

His farm and outdoor world will always be a peace offering to his family, friends and community. Jerry has been a partner to so many for a long time, and so all of these people will be grieving with you.

But we need to carry on his legacy and feel happy again. I would like to see a special donation made for a scholarship helping in some way to carry on Jerry's mission.

With God's grace we will see the cloud of grief that has hung over us all lifted.

Jerry,

Thank you for being the most wonderful grandfather to my girls. Your heart's love is as deep as an ocean, and God made certain he picked you for the job of Grandfather. It seemed so effortless for you to pick those girls up and place them on your shoulders and walk them all around the great outdoors. They were the only ones in the world who could tell YOU what to do, and you would say, "Yes Ma'am!" Kassi would get on the den floor and cover-up with the blanket while you were kicked back in the recliner watching T.V. after a hard day at work. She would fling the blanket back and command, "Grandiddy, get unner here!", and you would laugh and say, "Yes, Ma'am!" The two of you would sit in the floor under that blanket and laugh and laugh until you would finally "come up for air". All red-faced and tears rolling down your face, Kassi wouldn't let you go until she had her fill of fun with Grandiddy. I'm sure you slept like a log those nights, and they were many. Ali was never more proud when you took her under your wing to teach her about hunting and wildlife. You taught her how to find deer sign in the woods, and you taught her how to turkey call. She was the only camouflage wearing five-year-old I know who would sit in the woods with you and who could call in turkey and read sign. They miss you so much already.

Thank you for taking the time to teach me. There were so many things I learned to love because you took the time to share your knowledge with me. I have a love for photography because you bought me a camera and taught me how to use it. You taught me how to shoot a bow, a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol. The time you took me to the club and taught me how to shoot skeet is one of my favorite memories of us together. You taught me how to reload ammunition, and after I caught "the shooting bug", it's a good thing you did!. You taught me so much about nature and wildlife. We shared a love for reading...even Shakespeare! You gave so much to me, but the most important thing you gave me was your unconditional love. I am a better person because of you; I am honored to have had you in my life. I love you, Jerry.

Angela and Christy,
I am so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. I hoped that he would one day when recovered come to visit us here on 10MPCU.
I was glad to meet him and care for him, and also very lucky to have met you two girls. I hope you would find comfort in knowing how much comfort you gave him during this long ordeal. Your devotion was inspirational.
Thank you for the beautiful obituary; it was wonderful to learn of his life before tragedy brought him to us.
I will be thinking about you and your families in the days to come and wish you peace.
Sincerely, Carolyn

My senior year at Fleming Jerry and I were the only two guys on a bus full of Fleming students going to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon. I don't remember too much at all about the play we saw but I have never forgotten how much he and I laughed and enjoyed the trip coming and going. Before I got on the bus I don't think I even knew him; when I got off I thought I had known him all my life.
Even though the trip wasn't a huge event in the overall scheme of things, I never have forgotten it and never have forgotten Jerry.
So long Jerry. It seems you had a wonderful journey while you were here and as for my own journey, it's so much better because you were a part of it.

Christy, Ang and Brenda (That's who all our emails came from and that's what we know you by, in addition to the word "angels"). Herbie wanted to make sure that I told you three that God could not have provided any better angels than you three to watch over, keep and pray for Jerry. Ending all your emails with "pray for Jerry and pray for his soul.

Even though we prayed with all our earthly might, God had other plans and we will so miss Jerry's "smile", dry sense of humor, his love for teaching and the Hunters for the Hungry.

As one of the Golden Coral Boys, Herbie remembers the first time he wore his bibs to lunch and Jerry said, "Finally decided to get dressed, hunh?"

Jerry is a friend that will surely be missed.

I was one of the lucky one's to have Jerry as a hunters ed instructor. Me, the only adult in a room full of young boys, Jerry was definetely in his element. I took a lot of friction from him, including was I in the right room to did I have a #2 pencil--with an eraser. It was hard to maintain your composure when those blue eyes had a bead on you. I survived 2 or 3 more classes like that. Always with did you bring your pencil. I told him I was ready to show him my pencil and what he could do with it. Oh I should never had said that. Anyway got my certificate and consealed weapons permit thanks to all of the instructors. I'm thankful that I'll always have him watching out for me until the day I get to join him. There will always be a whole in my heart but with a lift to know he is pain free.
