Mary Carless Wright Given, 87, of Bedford, died August 26, 2009. Memorial service 4 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2009, at Epworth United Methodist Church, Thaxton. Arrangements by Burch-Messier Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Mary Carless Given, March 24, 1922, passed away August 26, 2009, at Friendship Rehabilitation Center, Roanoke, VA. She was born in Bluntville, Tennessee to the Reverend Mr. & Mrs. Onnie Carless Wright, a Methodist Minister who served several churches in the Holston Conference, over his lifetime. Mary attended Emery & Henry University in Virginia graduating with a Teachers Degree and taught in the elementary school systems in Rural Retreat, Wythville, Bedford and Stewartsville. She married Maurice Given who was principal of the Stewartsville Elementary School and lived for over 30 years in Montvale on her 38 acre farm. When Maurice passed away Mary maintained the farm for years until eight years ago she decided to move to a retirement facility. For the last three years she was living at Friendship Manor and prior to that for two years at The Methodist Home in Roanoke, VA. She was an active member of the Bedford Choral Society, Epworth United Methodist Church, Thaxton, VA. and a member of the Red Hat Society.
