Grover Thomas Obituary

Grover Wilson Thomas, 74, of Salem, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2009. He was born November 12, 1934 in Floyd County to Clyde W. Thomas, Sr. and Myrtle Jarrels Thomas Weeks, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his parents-in-law, Robert and Jewel Janney, his sister, Nettie Janney, and a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Sam Smith. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Robertine Janney Thomas. They were married March 14, 1959. He is also survived by two daughters, Kathy Martin and husband, Doug, of Christiansburg and Joyce Thomas, of Cloverdale; and by his cherished granddaughter, Rebekah (Beka) Martin. He is also survived by one brother, Clyde Thomas and wife, Deronda, of Floyd; two sisters, Lois Considder and husband, Herbert, of Roanoke, Mary Smith and husband, Amos, of Roanoke; brother-in-law, James Janney; special aunt, Edna Pring; and many beloved sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and by his caregiver, Jo Ann McMahan. Grover deeply loved all of his family and friends, and had a concern for for each one of them. Grover was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church. He worked at Adams Construction Company and their affiliate, H&S Construction Company, where he had 28 years of service. He was a former President of the Roanoke Valley Fiddle and Banjo Club, and a lifelong fan of bluegrass and gospel music. He fought many continual health problems throughout his life, however, he met each one with strength and determination. We are rejoicing with him, because now, he has received a new body from the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:1

For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down-when we die and leave these bodies-we will have a home in Heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.
Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. at 12 noon Monday, August 31, 2009. The Rev. Dr. Darryl G. Crim will officiate.. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday August 30th. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

Robertine, Kathy and Joyce...In one sense, I was saddened to hear of Grover's passing as he will be missed by many people. However, in another sense I was happy to hear of his going to be with our Lord. He is out of pain and in a much better place. I pray that each of you is comforted by your faith during this challenging time. May the Lord be with you each and every day as you deal with your loss.

Robertine and girls, we are truly sorry to hear of the passing of Grover. It's been a long time since we have seen you or him but the memories of the Fiddle and Banjo club live on within each one of us. Mama and daddy instilled the love and courage to draw strength from the Lord during times like these. And we rejoice with you, as I'm sure mama and daddy were waiting in Heaven for him and they are "pickin and grinnin" as I type this.

God bless you

My sincere sympathies for your loss. My father, Charles C. Smith, considered Mr. Thomas one of his best friends ever since their school days in Floyd. I read the obituary to Daddy over the phone. He wishes he could have made it to the visitation and funeral. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
