Albert Lee Fitzgerald

Albert Lee (Lefty) Fitzgerald, 88, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009. He was one of 13 children of David W. Fitzgerald and Mary Lulu Harris Fitzgerald, and was the only remaining member of his family. "Lefty" was retired from Norfolk Southern after 42 years of service. He also served his country during World War II in Iran, as a member of the United States Signal Corps, handling encrypted messages between Allies and Russia. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #197 and spent many hours there at cards with friends. "Lefty" is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lorraine; five children, sons, Frank Fitzgerald and his wife, Dorothy, Ronald Fitzgerald and his wife, Tracy, Roger and his wife, Robin; daughter, Gail Markley; and stepdaughter, Margaret Smith. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Davis, Ronald, William, Taylor, Chelsea Fitzgerald, Christina Markley, Nicole and Connor Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Harrison Fitzgerald. The family wishes to give great thanks to the caregivers at the South Roanoke Nursing Home for their care and to Dr. Nina K. Sweeney for her long-time care and compassion. A Memorial Service celebrating "Lefty's" life will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road. A reception will be held in the parish hall after service. The family requests no flowers or food be brought to the residence.
