Wayland Garrett Obituary

Wayland (Gus) Garrett, 67, of Salem, Va., passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2009, with his daughters by his side. He was preceded in death by his mother, Irma Sue Garrett; his sister, Jaqueline Foster Price; and his beloved cats, Boogie, Stinky, and Runt. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Sue Ellen Welch and her husband, Chris, and Mary Ann Gober and her husband, Kevin; his grandchildren, A.J., Emily, Riley, and Brandon; and his beloved cat, Buffy. Gus served four years in the United States Marine Corps and remained a proud and honorable Marine for the rest of his life. He was a lifelong Washington Redskins fan through thick and thin. Gus was an avid golfer and liked nothing better than being on the green. He was cared for deeply by a close group of friends that were "family," including Ronnie, Curtis, Tilford and Sylvia. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 9, 2009, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A memorial service will then be held at 4 p.m. His ashes will be entombed at a later date at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Gus' name to either the City of Salem Animal Shelter at 1301 Indiana Street in Salem, Va. 24153 or to the Angels of Assisi Shelter at 415 Campbell Avenue, SW in Roanoke, Va. 24016. Online condolences to the family may be made at johnmoakey.com. The Garrett family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va., 540-389-5441.

I was so very sorry to hear about the loss of Gus . We just found out today and hate that we missed his service. He was one very special guy and I so enjoyed working with him at the lab ,you both were so lucky to have him as a Dad . He talked of you both & his grandchildren often and was very proud of you. You guys were one of his greatest joys! Please know your all in our thoughts and prayers and I will miss his sweet smile and great hugs.
