Thomas Brooks Obituary

Thomas Talmadge (Tom) Brooks, 81, of Lynchburg, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 5, 2009, with his family by his side. Born on February 11, 1928, in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Thomas Lester Brooks and Lula Mae Wooten Brooks. Mr. Brooks served our country on the USS Midway during World War II and completed his education with the Navy. He was an employee of General Electric with 30+ years of service. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Lynchburg where he served the lord faithfully in many ways. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Russell Brooks; and father-in-law, Osby Edgar Marsh. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mildred Ann Marsh Brooks; and four children and spouses, Kay and Butch Mitchell, of Rustburg, Kathy and David Tolley, of Lynchburg, Karen Brooks and friend, Shane Owen, and Kevin and Shirley Brooks, all of Rustburg; mother-in-law, Mary C. Marsh, of Lynchburg; five grandsons; and five greatgrandchildren. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Lynchburg. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park with Military Honors by American Legion Post #16. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at the Brooks residence following the service and at other various times. The family suggests that memorials be sent to First Baptist Church. Diuguid Waterlick Chapel on Timberlake Road is assisting the family with arrangements. We were so sorry to hear of Talmadge's passing, though we know he went through many trials over the past few years. We will miss his kindness, his soft voice and genuine smile at the family reunions. He is at peace now. Our love and sympathy go out to all of the family; our hearts are with you.

First Baptist Church has lost their mainstay. During my tenure as pastor (1990-98)Tom was a source of constant support and encouragement. The word deacon comes from the Greek word diaconia which means to minister or serve. Tom embodied the role of deacon as few others in my experience. He served his Lord and the members of the congregation in more ways than I can list. He continued to be my friend over the years, and I shall miss him more than words can say. My love and prayers for Mildred and his wonderful family continue.

Dear Mrs. Brooks,
I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Brooks passing. He was so very wonderful visiting my mom, Katherine Bourke, so often when she was in the hospital several years ago. I remember him from church when I was growing up at First Baptist. He was such a dear, sweet man. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I am the driver that took over Tom's route delivering to the Danville area. I am so sorry I never got to know Tom. Every nurse at every nursing home would always ask about Tom. They all would say what a wonderful person he was. What a fine way to be remembered. So sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to Tom’s family. I remember taking my car to his shop back in the 70s, and remember him as a really good man who I was glad to know. I’m sure you will all miss him greatly, and wish you the comfort of knowing Tom has earned his peace and we’ll see him again in a better place.

Sincerely,

My prayers go out to the family. I saw Tom about 2 years ago and use to work at GE also. In fact we are cousins. My Grandmother was Goldie Wooten Williamson. God has one more good friend now.

God Bless
