Gene Wine II

Gene Wine II, 66, of Roanoke, passed away in his sleep on December 23, 2009. Born in Staunton, Virginia, on June 15, 1943, he was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Wine Thomas and father Eugene Gray Wine, Senior. He was a member of First Baptist Church Jacksonville, Florida for 20 years where he was active and working with the youth and coaching basketball for the YMCA. Upon returning to Roanoke in 1980, he and his family attended First Baptist Church, in Roanoke, where he continued to work with the youth and coached 4th through 6th grade RA Basketball. In 2007, he became a member of Preston Oaks Baptist Church and taught 6th and 7th graders till his death. His vocation was insurance but his passion was coaching basketball and teaching the youth about the love and saving grace of his precious Jesus. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Harriett Wine; two sons, Eugene Gray Wine III "Trey" and Charles Travis Wine "Travis" both of Roanoke; and two grandsons, Tyler of Roanoke and Michael of Fort Lauderdale; one brother, Clay Wine of South Carolina; two sisters, Cheryl Wine of South Carolina and Carol Hamilton of Virginia. Services will be held at Preston Oaks Baptist Church, Monday, December 28, 2009 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to the Family Life Center Building Fund at Preston Oaks Baptist church.
