Adele Zmarzly Obituary

Adele A. Zmarzly, 64, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2007. She was born May 4, 1943 to Virginia Truax Van Tilburg and Cecil William Van Tilburg in Jamestown, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia; aunts, Helen Vail (Paul), Jane Tofany (Vincent); uncle John Regan (Mary Lou); grandparents, Anne and Guy Truax; great-uncle, Andrew Johnson (Elinor); and miniature Dachshund, Max.
She graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing, New York, St. Bonaventure University, New York and Tulane University School of Public Health in New Orleans, La. She had a wonderful, diverse nursing career for forty two years. She served two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Columbia, S.A. from 1965 to 1967 and returned to Columbia for three more years with Project Hope from 1974 to 1977. She was fluent in Spanish and worked the past twenty years at the Allegany/Roanoke City Health Department. Her spirituality came from nature, hiking and the goodness she saw in everyone she met in her lifetime. Her two favorite saints were St. Anthony and St. Francis of Assisi; both Franciscan Friers. Her special hymn was "Let There be Peace on Earth."
She is survived by her loving husband, Stan, who was her soul-mate and best friend for 28 years; sweet pet, dachshund/beagle mix, Maggie; aunts, Kay Severtson (Elmer), Mary Lou Regan, Phyllis Truax (Sister Mary Norine of the Mercy Order); great-aunts, Elinor Johnson and Marge Truax; uncle, Paul Vail; many special cousins and one very special cousin, Meg Moran (Michael). She leaves many, many special friends, neighbors and co-workers at the Allegany/Roanoke City Health District.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks for all of their caring ways and special kindnesses shown to them and Adele during her illness. Special thanks to Charlene Faye and next door neighbors, Jim and Norma Preas. There are not words enough to express our appreciation and love for Dr. Fintel and wonderful staff at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center and the hospice staff of Good Samaritan Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Adele's memory to the St. Francis of Assisi Service Dogs, the American Cancer Society or to Good Samaritan Hospice. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 20, 2007 from 5 to 9 p.m. at John M. Oakey and Son, Salem. A private funeral is planned by the family at Adele's request. Arrangements by John M. Oakey and Son, Salem. Online condolences may be made at www.johnmoakey.com.

Adele was a person we always loved to see come through our doors at Valley Animal Hospital! She had such a wonderful way of making every person feel special, and would absolutely light up the room when she and Max or Maggie Rose came to visit. The dog cookies she made were delicious, (according to Dr. Poage:) and we are still giving out Max's recipe to every new dog owner. Her light will continue to shine in every person who knew her, and we are thankful that we were blessed by knowing such a genuine loving and caring person. Stan, please know that our prayers are with you and your family, and we ask that God will give you HIS peace during this time of overwhelming loss. If we can be of any help to you in any way, please just let us know. With our love, Denise and Bill Poage

I worked with Adele for a short time, but can not express what a impact she had on my life. She made me want to be a better person; mother, wife, nurse, daughter and friend. She had such and amazing personality. It was impossible to have a bad day when you were around Adele because she could always make you laugh. I will miss her dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family.

I never had the honor of meeting Adele, but I wish I had. I work for the Virginia Dept. of Health in the central office in Richmond, and her remarkable spirit and presence has reached half way across the state. I have heard and read so many wonderful things about her that she truly touched my heart. I can only imagine the joy of the moment when her soul reached the stars and all of the other angels whispered to her “welcome home.” To Adele’s family, know that the entire VDH family has its arms around you.

Adele made working at the health dept feel like a home away from home with her warmth and compassion and sincere interest in each of us. There are so many lessons she taught us by the way she lived her life. Adele will remain with us in our memories of her infectious smile, her laugh, her wonderfully warm hugs and her sense of humor. When we left work each day, she'd say to me "give Pearl licks from Maggie and hug Dad !" We'll carry you forever in our hearts Adele - it was an honor to know you !!

I believe that angels walk among us. When I first met her, I knew I was truly in the presence of one of God's angels. She could fill a room with peace, love and tolerance . Her energy was endless. Her spirit was calming and comforting to all in her presence.
Adele was one of those special people that God gives us for only a short time to teach us to live in His way.
May we all learn from his angel, Adele. I thank God and her family for allowing her to be in our lives. My condolences to the family. Always feel her presence and love when you begin to grieve your loss. God has called his beautiful angel home.

Stan and Maggie,
I am so sorry for your loss. I am so lucky to have worked with Adele at RCHD for the past two years. Words I would use to describe your beautiful wife would be: grace, love, compassion, and selflessness. My family enjoyed the Thanksgiving you visited us and my children love you both. I cannot express how much we will all miss her. Adele brought a ray of sunshine and a breath of fresh air to each and every one of us here at work when she arrived everyday. We love you.

I formerly worked with Adele at RCHD and we'd often see each other on a home visit. I always looked forward to seeing her and I will always remember her as a tremendously compassionate warmhearted person. I was very saddened to hear of her passing. Adele touched a lot of hearts and for me the memory of her smile and all the good that came with it will always be a part of my life. My deepest condolences to her family.

Dela

You were such an important part of my life. How can I begin to tell you what you mean to me? You have given me so many precious gifts-a reason to dream and believe in myself, a friend to laugh with, a sista for life. I Love you for being a woman, wife, Maggie's Mom and still had time to be a friend. I admired your love for everyone and everything. You showed me how to find the goodness in anything. I thank God for placing you in my life. I am sad that you are gone but happy that you are in heaven watching over me. Lots of Brown Sugar to you, Besitos y Abrazos!!! You will always be in my heart-Danyell

Stan, Maggie and Family,

My children and I will miss Adele's cheerful personality. My son's name is Maxwell, Max for short. Adele named a blue fish Max for him and told him about her babies Max and Maggie. Everyone says she's an angel in heaven. That may be true, but for us and her clients as well. She did her best work while she was here. Should you need someone to smile or talk to, just call.

God Bless you and Maggie,

Maurice, Rena, Mauricia ,and Maxwell Plummer

As Adele would call me....
