RAY HILLAM Obituary

Ray Cole Hillam 1928 ~ 2009 Ray Cole Hillam, age 81, passed away August 10, 2009 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was born July 25, 1928 in Carlin, Nevada, the son of James Ralph and Mabel Cole Hillam. He grew up in Yuba City, California leaving there to serve an LDS mission in Sweden and returning to earn a Bachelor's degree in Political Science at the University of Utah in 1954. He met his wife, Carolyn Sanders, at the University of Utah and they were married June 29, 1956 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They started their married life together in Washington, D.C. where Ray received an MA degree from George Washington University and a PhD in Political Science from American University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, spending his time in Tokyo, Japan as an intelligence analyst. In 1960 Ray joined the political science faculty at Brigham Young University where he taught for 33 years. He assisted in the establishment of the International Relations program and the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies. He served as chairman of the Political Science Department. He was the recipient of three Fulbright Scholar Awards to Vietnam, Taiwan and Beijing, China. He helped develop the Washington Seminar Program and also the China Teachers Program. He loved his career in teaching and enjoyed going to school everyday. He was tireless in shepherding his students, taking a personal interest in their learning and progress and making himself, his home, and his family a resource to them. He was influential in the lives of many young students with his natural ability to let them know that he cared about them. He loved his wife, five daughters and one son. His hobby was building a mountain cabin and including them in every step of the way, with skiing time in between. His children also enjoyed the benefits of his career, traveling and living in many places around the world, adding to the richness of their lives with their father as a wonderful and knowledgeable tour guide. If we could say one thing about Ray it would be that he persevered, particularly through his illness. His life provided a profound lesson to all around him in the virtues of patience, sense of humor and an unwillingness to complain. He was an inspiration to all of us. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He held many callings, including bishop, high councilor, but he enjoyed most his calling as Priest's quorum advisor working with young men at a crucial time in their lives, influencing them in a positive way. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, five daughters and one son, Jennifer Barton (Gary), Jayne Hillam (Patty), Mark Hillam (LeAnn), Anne Hillam (Jen), Karen Hillam (Bernie) and Kathryn Chamberlain (Wade). He is also survived by his brother, Howard Hillam and his sister, Noreen Wilson. He has 10 wonderful grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 12 noon at the Oak Hills 1st Ward, 1038 North 1200 East, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the Oak Hills 1st Ward on Friday, August 14, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. and also on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery following the funeral. Dear Carolyn,

Bob had learned of Ray's passing and signed the guest book while I was away, but you were important to ME, too, because long before our marriage 48 years ago, I knew from Bob of his dear friends Carolyn & Ray. So I have appreciated your friendship through the years - with us though our visits were infrequent, and with our Sara, also. And I will always remember how kind and wise Ray was to me as a naive and troubled young BYU student. We will miss him, too.

I was one of many students who loved being with Professor Hillam in the London Study Abroad program (1978). His genuine interest in our education and progress has influenced me for 3 decades now. Also, his insisting "the only way to learn a city or country is to walk it" has brought rich experiences! What a blessing he and his family have been to me! God bless each of you.

I love Ray and Carolyn. I have missed being near them for the good conversations and keeping up with their lives. Ray was always a good visit, with him very interested in Karen and our family. We served in a bishopric during our first contacts and they were young marrieds, as were we. I was proud of his intellectual accomplishments and contributions to the international programs at BYU, and his later call to be bishop. Carolyn was a personality in her own right. Best wishes to Ray's survivors. Do well and remember your good man, Ray.

Prof. Hillam and his lovely wife Carolyn became good friends during my sophomore year of college as he served in our ward bishopric. They adopted all willing students and I was one of them. About my senior year, when Ray was away in Vietnam, I had the privilege of staying in their home to help out in any way that I could with the Jennifer, Jane and Todd, who was an infant. Carolyn and I had many great talks and the whole family told me what they thought of my boy friends or dates at that time as they came to the Hillam front door. It was great fun.
We kept in touch over the more than 42 years since. What a great family.

To the Ray Hillam Family,

Dr. Hillam influenced me beyond any words which I can express. I am a professor of Political Science today as a direct result of Ray Hillam's influence in my life. I will forever treasure the time I spent in his classes, and the numerous times I was invited into his home to experience his love of teaching that extended far beyond the classroom. Though I know this is a difficult time for you all, you can be comforted in knowing that Ray's influence will continue for many generations because of his kindness, dedication, and passion for his art.

Ray came into my life in my mid adult years and had a profound affect on my career at BYU. I'll never forget his infectious enthusiasm and his invitation to our students to go "running at Runnymede" England in remembrance of Magna Carta. On a crisp afternoon a coach full of students emptied to ecstatic shouts of glee as we ran across the field--Ray leading the charge.
Ray will be missed and I loved my moments with him and Carolyn.
Much love and gratefulness,

To Carolyn and family,

I am writing this from far off Ghana in West Africa where my husband and I are serving as missionaries. I happened to notice, as I read the Deseret News online, this obituary. Carolyn Sanders is an old friend from 33rd Ward days in Salt Lake City. Please accept our love and sympathy at this difficult time. May the Lord bless you with peace and comfort. With love, Pat Campbell Bevan

Ray was a colleague and friend from our days as graduate students at the University of Utah (and members of Pi Sigma Alpha) through our time in Washington, DC, to my visiting professorships in Political Science at BYU. I will miss him.

Ray was an inspiration to me as a student at BYU. I served as his graduate assistant during his trying times with President Wilkinson and the BYU administration and was always impressed by his dignity and honor and his refusal to let what happened to him interfere with his testimony of the gospel. He was instrumental in guiding me in my own career, and I have ever felt grateful for his friendship and leadership. Lisa and I express appreciation to him and Carolyn and extend profound condolences to his family and associates.

I will never forget a conversation with Ray as a student at BYU in the mid 1980's. I had the lead part in a play performed off-campus about a missionary who had returned home from his mission for intellectual reasons, which didn't sit well with one of my professors who came to see the show one night. I was troubled and was explaining that to Ray who told me about a similar situation in his years as a professor at BYU. I asked why he hadn't left. He said, "Because it was my school and my church, too." I remember being glad he hadn't left.
