Floyd Cannon Obituary

Floyd Keith "Barney" Cannon

JEFFERSON, TX - Floyd Keith Cannon, age 53, suddenly passed away at his home on April 19, 2009. Affectionately known as Barney Keith to many friends and as Barney Cannon to his loyal KWKH radio listeners, friends and family, Barney was born on October 9, 1955 in New Boston, TX. He is the son of Jean Cannon and the late Floyd H. Cannon of New Boston, TX and grandson of the late Jesse W. Campbell.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Kaye, twins Kimberly and Kyle of Jefferson, TX, his mother, Jean Cannon, his grandmother, Irene Campbell of New Boston, TX, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Barney started radio in 1972 as a part-time announcer in Clarksville and New Boston, TX. After working in Texarkana for KCMC, he was offered his first programming job with WCDS in Glasgow, KY. After stints in Wichita Falls, TX, and Oklahoma City, Barney made his last stop in radio at KWKH AM 1130, where he worked for almost 25 years. Barney started out hosting the weekend edition of the Interstate Road show. His favorite though was being the host of the morning show with thousands of loyal listeners that were also his friends.

Barney was an Eagle Scout with BSA Troop #36 of New Boston. Barney was an avid John Wayne fan. He also enjoyed Dutch oven cooking and camping. Barney loved the history of KWKH's relationship with the Louisiana Hayride. During re-unions of the Hayride, Barney was like a kid in a candy store.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2009 from 6-8pm at Haggard Funeral Home in Jefferson, TX. Services will be at 10am on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Jefferson, TX. Graveside services will follow in New Boston, TX at Red Bayou Cemetery at 3 p.m. Sign the online guest book at haggardfuneralhome .com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Prospect Baptist Church, 5841 N. Highway 59, Jefferson, TX 75657 or to your favorite charity.

Barney always ended his radio show by saying, "May God be with you and you be with God. And you're never fully dressed unless you're wearing a big ol' smile." Now, our beloved Barney is with God and wearing a big ol' smile. Haggard Funeral Home

Barney was one of the men that hired me at Gap Broadcasting. I was brand new to radio and he showed me the ropes in a lot of things. He was my boss, a mentor, but most importantly he was my friend. I am going to miss him a whole lot

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I feel as though we've lost a country legend and I'm so happy that we have that promise from our Heavenly father to bring us through these times! If we could all bring smiles to peoples faces as Barney did would'n the world be a better place!

Kaye..My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I miss Barney terribly. After I left Shreveport in September 2001, we would talk on the phone periodically and that laugh was worth a million bucks! Remember "God gave us memories so we'd have roses in December."

I have loved KWKH as long as I have lived in this area(since 1979). I loved Barney and his "guy next door" friendliness. Such a nice, nice man. All of us KWKH listeners are saddened by his sudden passing. My condolences to his family and to the KWKH family. Look to the Lord for strength during this difficult time.

I first met Barney many years ago when he was weekend host of the Interstate Road Show. Each time we talked I admired his outlook on life more and more. I remember one time he told me no matter how bad something seems if you look hard enough you will find something good. Rest in peace Barney you will be missed by many, many people.
