William Walter Campbell, Jr., passed away on Saturday, August 30 of Culpeper, Va. Born in Alexandria, Va. on March 4, 1922, son of the late William W. Campbell, Sr., and Charlotte Lee Thomas Campbell. He attended schools in Alexandria and graduated from George Washington High School. He was an active member of the Alexandria Old Dominion Boat Rowing Team in the 1930's and 1940's.

In February 1941, he went to work at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. as an apprentice glassblower, making scientific instruments for research. Drafted and inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1944, he received orders to return to the Naval Research Laboratory to continue this urgent work for defense. He retired from the Laboratory in 1974 after 33 ½ years of service. He then continued his dedicated expertise as a glassblower at the Laboratory until 2002, working part-time contractor to fulfill requests for specialized glass apparatus.

In 1974, he moved with his wife from Springfield, Va. to Front Royal, Va. There, he became active in the Warren County Heart Association. His combined efforts with a co-worker were responsible for introducing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation to the Front Royal area. He was also active in other community volunteering. He served on the Front Royal Planning Commission from 1986-1994 and on the Board of Directors of Warren Memorial Hospital from 1993-2001. He was a member of The Auxiliary of Warren Memorial Hospital and the Masonic Unity Lodge #146. He was a former senior member of the Front Royal Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

He and his wife moved to Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community in Culpeper, Va. in 2002. He maintained his membership at First Baptist Church in Front Royal where he was a Deacon and was a Watch Care member of Culpeper Baptist Church in Culpeper, VA. He was also a member of the Culpeper Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jewell Thomas Campbell, of Culpeper, Va.; three daughters, Patricia C. Springer, of Alexandria, Va., Sharon C. Selby, of Remington, Va. and Constance C. Wilkinson, of Radford, Va.; six grandchildren, Cynthia R. Kirkland, Bealeton, Va., Amy R. Allison, Warrenton, Va., William S. Springer, Fairfax, Va., Scott C. Springer, Springfield, Va., Jennifer W. Underwood, Radford, Va. and Karen Campbell Wilkinson, Chicago, IL and 8 great- grandchildren and a brother DeArcy T. Campbell, Daytona Beach, FL. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Marie C. King, Ruth C. Morgal, Alene C. Robey and Jean C. Cockrell.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Front Royal Rotary Club and Culpeper Rotary Club.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Front Royal, Va. on Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at 12 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Dr. R. Mark Jordon.

The family will receive friends at a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to First Baptist Church, 14 West First Street, Front Royal, VA 22630 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Maddox Funeral Home, Inc. in Front Royal, Va.
