Fawzi Pualwan Obituary

Fawzi A. Pualwan, M.D., 82, of Spencer, died peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty (Green) Pualwan; three children: Ramsey, Emily and Benjamin; two grandchildren, and brother, Munir, and pre-deceased by his other brother, Adel.

Dr. Pualwan's life meant so much to so many. Born in Barouk, Lebanon in 1926, he moved with his family to Chile when he was six months old. When he was twelve, the family returned to Lebanon for a visit but World War II broke out and they were unable to leave. While in Lebanon, he attended the American University of Beirut. In 1945, the war ended and he came to the U.S. to earn his B.A. from Vanderbilt University and his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society.

After completing his chief residency in surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, Dr. Pualwan volunteered and served in the U.S. Army where he was commanding officer and chief of surgery at the 121 Evacuation Hospital in Seoul, Korea. Captain Pualwan earned the Commendation Ribbon and Medal for outstanding service.

In 1960, Dr. Pualwan moved his family to Worcester, where he practiced medicine as Chief of Surgery at Fairlawn, Worcester City and Hahnemann hospitals, practiced at St. Vincent and Memorial Hospitals, was Assistant Professor of Surgery at UMass Medical School, and maintained a private practice for 35 years. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Society, Worcester Medical Society, Worcester Committee on Foreign Relations, and a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church since 1960.

An avid amateur photographer and true cosmopolitan, Dr. Pualwan spoke five languages, loved to travel, and shared these interests with the Travelling Camera Ltd. photo club.

At the request of the family the memorial service will be private. To share your thoughts and memories please visit: FawziPualwan.ilasting.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to be made to: Physicians for Peace, 757.625.7569

42 years ago when I was 5 years old, Dr. Pualwan gave me 5 stitches under my chin and "a lollipop to calm my nerves." I have never forgotten the kindness he displayed while treating a very scared child. Although I did not know his family, my thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. I am very sorry for your loss.
