Joseph McGee Obituary

Joseph W. McGee, 23, of Worcester, passed away suddenly Thursday, November 27, from complications with diabetes.

He leaves his mother, Theresa (Kwiatkowski) Conte-McGee; his brother, Anthony J. Conte and his wife Francesca; his sister, Karin M. Conte and her partner Diedra Finney; his grandparents Joseph W. and Theresa (Ritacco) Kwiatkowski; his "Bestest" friend, Jen Swindell; his two nieces, Mia and Gabriella Conte, and his nephew, Alessandro Conte, whom he absolutely adored; his aunt and godmother, MaryAnn Ritacco and her husband Gianfranco; his godfather, William Ritacco, Jr, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Joey was born in Worcester, July 7,1985. He was the son of the late Joseph J. McGee. He attended North High School. After leaving high school, he decided the best thing to do was to write, and as most people would agree, it worked out for him. His published works include "In The Wake of The Night", "Phil's Place", "Darkness Won't Rest: Phil's Place II", "The Sound of Horror", "Tripartite", "The Reaper" & "Snow Hill". He's been nominated for the 2009 Bram Stoker Award. He was also a member of the New England Horror Writers Association and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Worcester, Aerie #4311. He was also co-owner of J&J Security & Patrol Services. In addition to writing, Joey loved Christmas, the Boston Celtics and country music. He was a quiet giant with a mountain for a heart who left us better than he found us.

Joey's funeral will be held Wednesday from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St Ann Church, 24 Mulberry St. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5-8 PM. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: The Robert W. Hansen Diabetes Fund, c/o The Fraternal Order of Eagles, 53-55 Norfolk St., Worcester, MA 01604.

It was such an honor to have Joe review my debut novel last year upon it's release. I considered him a kindred spirit, and yet I can only aspire to have as big a heart as he did. Such a wonderful, shining soul. I am certain he is still tending to those things that meant so much to him while here, and will continue to work in the lives of the writers he networked with and the people he loved. May his family be comforted in this time of sorrow, but also know that he lives on in spirit.

Joe was a wonderful person who had so much talent. He was also a very caring and kind person. When my sister died earlier this year, he contacted me and told me if I needed anything to please let him know. He was just that kind of person. His heart was just as big as the wonderful gift of writing that God had given him. I and so many others will miss him. Rest in peace Joe, I hope you look down on all of us writers who would one day like to be able to measure up to half of what you did in your short time on this Earth. I'm going to miss you.

I never got to meet Joe but we emailed occasionally and he was a supporter of my own horror writing -- I hope people will continue to buy his books to keep his spirit alive! I'm going to order one myself at Amazon.com right now. My condolences to all his loved ones.

To Karin, Diedra & Family,
My deepest sympathies to you at this time. Joey was not only a talented writer but a sweet man as well. I can remember him back when he was a boy, in his Mom's house, doing his homework or playing video games! I can remember you, Karin, babysitting and always keeping such a watchful eye over him. He was lucky to have a wonderful sister like you, and you lucky to have him as well. May you find peace knowing he is in God's hands now and that he will now watch over him. I love you both and if there is anything I can ever do for you, please don't hesitate to call on me. That's what friends are for.

Though I didn't know Joe too well, he had befriended me on MySpace and we talked time to time. Every so often he asked me how I was doing and how the writing was going. Such a talented young man, and such a humanitarian. He loved helping the less fortunate, he loved being charitable. He loved writing, and he leaves behind a legacy in his works. My condolenses and heartfelt sympathies go out to the McGee family in this time of grief. Joe, Rest in Peace, my friend.

I met Joe by chance at the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He asked me my name and thanked me as the webmaster, for his addition to our Aerie website. I was embarrassed to admit to him that I had no idea he was a writer until his mom had informed me about the horror stories. I took the time to look over a few and was impressed by his descriptive manner and how he could project you into his stories. I will forever remember how proud Terri was when she described him and his craft. Joseph may have left us, but his gift will keep a part of him forever immortal.

God Bless
.

Joe, we had some things in common, you and I. Now you've passed on from this world. Too young, Far, far too young. I feel badly for your obviously loving family. My sincere sympathy goes out to all.

When I first heard the news, I hoped it was a mistake, that it was another Joe McGee, but by the end of the day, there were just too many people posting on the internet to believe that they all got it wrong.

Joe, I hope you can see the outpouring of sympathy and condolences from the writing community. You made a big impression on us all, and we're going to miss you terribly.

You were taken from us FAR too young, Joseph McGee. Your writing impressed me and you were well on your way as an author; indeed, you were already established and we are lucky to have your words still with us. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

I met Joe in August at a signing and when I joined the New England Horror Writers he emailed me and offered his expertise and experience to help me with my own work. I must have emailed him fifty times and he responded every time I asked him something. He was a great guy and the best memory I have of him is when we were at Rock and Shock in October and we hung out and talked all night about writing and life and whatever else came to mind. I was shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. Again, he was a great guy, always willing to help out with whatever questions I had about anhything. I'll definitely miss him.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Joe face to face, but we spoke online a few times. He seemed like a great guy. And if reactions in the horror community are any indication, he was that and far more.

Mere words cannot heal wounds, but hopefully they can help soothe some of the pain. My sincere condolences go out to Joe's family and friends, and anyone who is feeling the pain of this terrible loss.

Respectfully,

Kenneth Wood

Joe,

Thank you for entertaining me with your words. I appreciate your kind words regarding my works. I appreciate you as a human, as a person who looks beyond the familiar faces and reaches out to strangers. Though you are gone from this existence, your voice lives on within your books and the efforts you have done to help others. You are dearly missed. You have changed me in ways you may have never known. You made me stronger and taught me to love every day of my life. You helped me to reach out to others who are more unfortunate than myself. You are a beacon upon which your words are the cascading light. May all that you have stood for be remembered and cherished by so many others. Again, thank you! You are dearly missed.
