Father Minkler was the assistant pastor at St. Joseph's Parish in Rensselaer 1972-1979, the diocesan director of Apostleship of Prayer 1974-1980, a member of the Diocesan Family Life Commission of Albany Diocese 1978-1980, auditor of Diocesan Tribunal 1979-1980, assistant at St. Teresa of Avila Parish 1979-1980, secretary to Archbishop Joseph T. When remembering our Brother and Friend, please reflect on the following example of how he lived his ministry to Christ: (taken from Liguorian magazine) Father John Minkler responded to a patient's request to see a priest at a VA Hospital in New York. The young man had AIDS. He told his story to Father Minkler, who soon learned that the dying man had been rejected by his family. After administering the sacrament of reconciliation and giving him Communion, Father Minkler called the young man's parents and pleaded with them to come to the bedside of their son, who was quickly slipping away. The young man's mother was at his side when he died. Just before his death, the young veteran expressed his profound gratitude to Father Minkler: Thank you, father, for making it possible for me to see Jesus. That story goes to the very heart of what our brother was about. Condolence page at www.wjlyonsfuneralhome.com

Father Minkler was a priestly priest. Many of us were raised in ,Catholic schools in a devout way. We liked what we knew it was our comfort zone. It was between us and God. Then things changed but we did not. We had no voice other than Father Minkler´s...Thank you Father and Rest In Peace. You earned it.

To the Family of Father Minkler,

Our paths crossed many times, my Aunt and Uncle bought your family home on Ford Ave. My cousin Anne Cassidy Engelsher attended school with Father at CCHS. Most of all my cousin, Father John Turner was also a priest at the sametime. He was killed in 1975 in a car crash. He grew up across the street from your family. I am sorry for your loss and sorry for the loss of life for a man so seemingly dedicated to what he believed in. May he rest in peace.

Dear Patty - Although it has been many years since our school days together at St.Patricks, I have such great memories of our friendship which include getting to know your brother, Fr.John. I realize no words can bring comfort to you at this time, but I hope you'll smile just a litte as you remember how, on numerous occassions, I would stop by your home. While waiting for you, well if Father was home from school, he and I would start to "chat." Father used to sit with me for what seemed like hours discussing and debating a variety of topics - and he made an 11 year old girl feel very special in that her opinions were valuable and important. It seems like Fr. John was destined to be a compassionate, caring man with a great capacity to not only listen but truly "hear."

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, your sister Colleen and family during this difficult time.

My deepest condolences to Father Minkler's family. I had the priviledge of knowing Father from 1987-2000 as an RN at the Albany VA. He was a wonderful priest and ministered faithfully to our patient's needs and requests. I admired Father Minkler for taking such a profound interest in our Veterans. He was a humble faithful servant of God and will be greatly missed.
