Stanley Read Obituary
Stanley Arnold Read slipped peacefully into his next adventure on Friday, April 3, 2015. Born in 1941, he was the oldest of his mother's "best accomplishments." His parents, Henry Garland Read, Jr. and wife, Alma, preceded him in death, as well as a beloved granddaughter, Amber Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Estelle Cata Read; children, Joy Read and husband, Jim Starzinski, Jesse Read and wife, Missie; his former wife, Betty Read; stepdaughters, Sarah Crichlow and husband, Rey, and Megan Fricks and husband, Brandon. His grandchildren include Alex Starzinski, Elijah Starzinski, Charlotte and Noah Crichlow, and Mallory Raimondi and Jordan Fricks. He is also survived by his brothers Bob and wife, Virginia, and Barry and wife, Beverly, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
At an early age, Stan discovered the joys of being outdoors and learning about wildlife. He had an insatiable desire to learn, not only about nature, but just about everything - there wasn't a subject he couldn't engage in conversation about. His joy of reading led to his master's degree in English Literature, followed by his law degree, which led to an extensive career in the legal field, including two years as a New Mexico District Judge. While his career accomplishments were many, at the end of the day, he was happiest with loved ones around him, birds and chickens to feed and a satisfying trek in the woods. He will be sorely missed.
Services to honor Stan will be held Friday, April 10, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Golf Course. A reception will follow. Should you choose to honor Stan with a donation, Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR, 72202, www.heifer.org, would be his favorite.

Stan Read was my instructor in humanities at Western Washington State College [now Western Washington University]. He was open, sensible, erudite, and thoroughly human. I learned so much about intellectual life and adult life. I ended up in his discussion section in Fall Quarter 1970 by accident; thereafter, I chose his sections in Winter Quarter and in Spring Quarter quite deliberately. Each discussion thrilled me. Stan chewed an unlighted cigar in his mouth and put his cowboy boots on the table. He encouraged free-ranging discussion and tried to keep first-year students on task [or within a feet miles of task]. What an experience! Stan kept all experiences and perspectives relevant. He changed my life for the better.
