Brian Kean Obituary

Brian Arthur Kean, 24, died Feb. 20, 2009, at Alaska Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family.
A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m., with a visitation 2-3 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Eagle River. A reception will be immediately after the service at the Eagle River Lions Club on Eagle River Road.
Brian was born Aug. 1, 1984, in Fort Belvoir, Va., to Bob and Jenny Kean. He moved to Alaska when he was 10 months old. He graduated from Chugiak High School in 2002. Brian was an honor student and four-year varsity letterman in wrestling.
He earned his Eagle Scout Award with Troop 229. Brian was an avid outdoorsman and loved sports, hunting, fishing, hiking and rock climbing. He enlisted in the Alaska National Guard and served six years with the 176th Security Forces. He was a student at the University of Alaska Anchorage majoring in biology.
His family recalled: "Brian was the most wonderful son, grandson, big brother and daddy any family could ever have. He always set a great example and loved his family and friends with all his heart. He was the 'life of the party' and wanted to make everyone happy. He inspired his siblings, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches, co-workers and even his own parents. He will forever be in our hearts."
Brian is our hero, his family said.
"What we do in life, echoes in eternity."
Brian is survived by his son, Roman Kean; his brothers, Steven and Kevin Kean; his sister, Kelly Kean; mother, Jennifer (Thompson) Kean; father, Bob Kean; stepmother, Electa Kean; grandparents, Tom and Joanne Kean and Tom and Janet Thompson; uncles, Mike and Tom Thompson and Roy Kean; and cousins, Jessica, Emily and Mike Thompson.

To the Kean family

Words cannot convey my deepest sorrow for your loss. I had the honor of knowing and working with Brian. At the service the sun shined brightly through the window for only a few seconds. It reminded me when Brian would arrive at work always with a big, big smile, a strong hand shake and an excited hello. Again I am sorry for your loss and I will continually keep you in my prayers to help guide and strengthen you.

The first time I had the opportunity to work with Brian was a TDY to Korea for Commando Warrior. I was so impressed how mature he was for his age. I never heard him complain about anything. When we returned to Anchorage, we were re-doing the squads. I made sure Brian was on my squad. He was always dependable and an inspiration and encouragement to me. I have never met such a fine young man. Brian, you will be missed. To the Kean family, You are in our prayers, may God comfort you during this time.

To the Kean's,
My heart goes out to each of you. I learned of this just this week and have been numb since. My son and I were Brian's next door neighbors up until last year. I am so sorry for your loss. Brian was an AMAZING young man. I would always tell him 'your parents must be so proud of you!'. He was so kind-hearted, so adored Roman, such a wonderful neighbor. He touched so many with his smile, his being such a gentleman, his good-heartedness. My prayers go out to you; may God comfort each of you, may He hold Roman close to His heart, and may the love that lived in Brian continue on.

I only knew Brian through work, but still considered him a friend. I think he had a way of making people feel as though they were old friends regardless of how long they really knew him for. He was our motivation, the person that kept our spirits high no matter what the circumstances. He was someone that people could look up to not only as a "squared away troop" or leader, but as someone to model themselves after personally because he was so kind, giving, and thoughtful. He is greatly missed.
The Kean family is in my family's thought's and prayers.

For so many of the past years all my mentors and those that I look up to when I make decisions about my life, have always been older and more experienced. Boss, of course you and your values played an improtant part in my life and who I am today. Brian is one of the very few exceptions to the experience and knowledge of my mentors. He always asked how I was and what he could do for me. When asked to accomplish undesirable tasks, he smiled and pressed on. I am privlaged to have had Brian work with and for me in the guard. I am honored to have watched Brian grow from teenager to a fine example of a man, or more appropriately, a Kean. Brian and all of you are in our prayers.

I met Brian a few years ago through biology classes at UAA and since then had had many courses with him. Brian always impressed me by being a friendly, engaging, dedicated, and truly bright individual! I will certainly remember him for the charismatic individual that he was... who always knew how to have a good time...and for his endless love for Roman. I realize that no volume of condolences can begin replace what you have lost... but I pray that through the memories and sympathies of others you will find comfort in knowing that Brian left a lasting impression on many lives.
