Kenneth Laufer Obituary

On Jan. 19, 2015, after a life well lived, Kenneth Simon "Opa" Laufer, M.D., 77, returned to the cosmos. His journey began on Nov. 29, 1937, in Trenton, N.J., born to Margaret (McNamara) and Milton Laufer. Shortly after his arrival, the family relocated to Jackson Heights, N.Y., where Milton, a Big Band musician, could be closer to his work. Five years later, the Laufer's welcomed a new baby girl, Kathleen Ann. Ken adored his little sister, and the siblings remained close for the rest of their lives. Ken attended Public School 69 and William Bryant High School, where his outstanding intellect and love of science blossomed. He always performed at the top of his class. Kathy remembers hearing his physics teacher comment that they had to do extra studying to keep up with this brilliant student. As a young man, Ken yearned for the Great Outdoors and, after graduation, he enrolled in Forestry School in upstate New York. He went on to Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and a master's degree in Entomology. Ken worked for the Park Service as a ranger and firefighter, adventuring around the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, a land he fell in love with and to which he vowed to return. In the meantime, his mother had decided to pursue a degree in nursing. It was while helping Margaret with her studies that Ken discovered what would become his life's passion, medicine. He was soon accepted to Downstate Medical in New York. Enjoying his studies, but dreaming of living closer to nature, he arranged for a transfer to the University of Washington. Shortly before setting out, he met Stephanie Berkowitz, the young woman who would become his wife and the mother of his three children. The couple moved west. Their first child, Noah, was born in Seattle, Wash., and their daughter, Rebekah, arrived while the family lived in Portland, Ore. To help pay for his studies, Ken had enlisted in the Air Force and in 1968, after many requests, he was finally transferred to Alaska. His youngest, Ethan, was born at EAFB a year later. As sometimes happens, the couple had their struggles, and after ten years of marriage, Ken and Stephanie separated. The two remained close, bonded by shared life experience and love for each other and for their children. Ken was now a single father with three young children to raise while working long hours to help establish what would become Medical Park Family Care. His sister, Kathy, had followed her big brother to Alaska, and in witnessing her brother's efforts to provide a stable home life for his children, she made the decision to help. Kathy, her husband, Eldon Elder and her son, Marc Pellicciaro, joined the household. Ken and Kathy's parents soon followed their children to Anchorage. When Margaret passed in 1978, Milton moved in with the family. Ken thoroughly enjoyed his life, making friends wherever he went. When he wasn't "saving lives and stamping out disease," he spent his days with friends and family, seeking out powder stashes on his mono-ski and exploring the far corners of Alaska and the world beyond. In 1991, he met Gisela Harris, who became his sweetheart and favorite adventure companion. Gisela stayed by Ken's side for the remainder of his life, becoming a beloved family member and the much adored "Oma" to his grandchildren. In 2000, much to his delight, his son, Noah, joined his practice and in 2005, after over three decades at Medical Park, Ken retired from medicine. Ken and Gisela had planned to travel the world, but as Ken was often heard to say, "Life is what happens while you're making other plans." It soon became apparent that this wonderful man was slipping away, and in 2009, Ken was officially diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's disease. The family continued to come together, holding frequent gatherings and spending as much time as possible with him for the remaining years of his life. He is survived by his sister, Kathy Elder; his sweetheart, Gisela Harris; his children and their spouses, Noah and Michelle Laufer, Rebekah and Benjamin Garnett and Ethan Laufer and Valerie Truncali; his nephew, Marc Pellicciaro; his grandchildren, Ellie, Max, Abby, Sam and another soon-to-be-born grandson; along with countless others who knew and loved him. There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at 1 p.m., at the Kincaid Chalet. Please join us. Mark your calendars, and bring your favorite Ken story.

Ken invited me stay at his place in Girdwood on weekends, as a medical student in 1996. I have some wonderful memories of skiing with him, Rebekah and "Bones". 25 years later, my wife and I drove around Girdwood trying to find the house that he had built. We never found it. Thanks again to him and his family for the hospitality. He lived a full life. He told me a story once of driving along the Turnagain arm on his way home from work. He spotted an orca beached on the silt. Knowing the dangers of walking on that surface, but wanting to look at the whale, he put on his snowshoes and plodded out to the whale. It was still alive and breathing, though it would not be by the time the tide returned.

I still miss Ken nine years out from his passing. And I'm still using one of the two inflatable kayaks we researched and bought together and then flew down to Utah to float the Escalante River in 1998. Ken flew down his dog, Lolo, who accompanied him on the float. They were inseparable.
I wish Ken and I were still adventuring together.

Ken and I used to have coffee every morning and have a chat about India and other things in the world.

He was a great guy and it always impressed me and moves me that he and his sister had brought the Ashes of their father all the way to Varanasi for immerssion in the holy Ganga.

Varanas Varanasian and still treasure the books he gifted me.

Ken was a great friend. I remember his adventurous spirit.
He was probably one of the last private pilots to fly his plane deep into the Grand Canyon. (A single engine Mooney Mite).
He had a lot of wisdom and compassion.

I know you, Dr Ken, must have been quite a man to make Giesla Harris so happy all the time. Whenever the B Club met, Gie was always happily telling a story and so full of giggles. I contribute her behavior because you loved her so. May you relish happiness there where you're finally home! God be with you.

What a wonderful man... As a friend of his daughter since we were in elementary school, Ken let me stay in his home when I was going through a very turbulent time in my life. He cared for everyone without judgement, and brought light and his sense of adventure everywhere. Love to the family...what a wonderful legacy of love he leaves for all.

An Alaska Mountain should be named after this wonderful man, doctor, father, grandfather, and friend.
He was my Doctor, and so kind and compassionate in everything he did....he had such a wonderful Joie De Vivre, and tons of stories that we shared. He was his own man.
To Noah, (who is still my doctor) and all of his family: Your father blessed you with such a legacy, and from the bottom of my heart, he will be forever missed.
Blessings to you,

Dr Laufer was my doctor starting in 1976. He was an amazing man. A true down home doctor that spent time with you and talked. He had his own definitions of various medical situations to see how you were doing. There should be a book on them. He will be missed. Jim Wood

Dr. Laufer delivered my three babies. My neighbor and son's godmother, Mary McKinnon, (Rose Morin's sister in these condolences) drove me to the hospital and formed a relationship with Dr. Laufer, who then became the Mckinnon family doctor. Ironically, he also became the doctor for the other two children's godparents; but without enduring a spirited political discussion with Mary McKinnon over the top of a woman in labor.
I moved from Anchorage but stayed in contact with Ken Laufer with messages sent through the godparents.
A few years ago, I was back in Anchorage and went to see Dr. Laufer for "the second opinion," taking with me pictures of the children he delivered, who were then in their mid-20's. He was delighted.
He set a high standard for compassion, concern and care for a family to have in a family doctor. Over the years I might drop in to a walk in clinic for care, but if it was a situation which appeared serious I always wandered back to Anchorage, so they could dig my file out of the basement and I could get Dr. Laufer's assessment.
My condolences to the family, my prayers are with you and for Ken.

I had the privilege to live in Ken's home in Girdwood for several years. He was the kindest person I have ever met and his zest for enjoying life and the outdoors has shaped my life immensely. He truly loved his family and enjoying “Adventures” with them more than anything. He was a dear friend and my wife Denise and I really miss him. I'm sure he's on his Mono Ski with his dogs in tow.

Dr. Laufer (Ken) became our family Doc not long after we returned home from our Pentagon assignment. He always had winning way with our kids and Kim and I. Noah has continued that role and tradition of care and trust - a tribute to his father and their family. Our gratitude for Ken's years of thoughtful care-giving are deeply appreciated; we recall our visits and encounters with appreciation. Our thoughts prayers turn for your family - please know and remember there are a tremendous number of we Alaskans, generations of us, who Ken impacted and influenced. We recall him and your family with joy and thankfulness.

I had the priveledge of knowing Ken in his early years in Alaska. Over my Jr High and High School years I watched the kids when Ken and Steph were away and I hunted and fished with Ken. Ken became my inspiration and still is as I look back in my life.

I was a patient of Dr. Laufer's from 1980 to 1994. I'll always remember his warm demeanor and great sense of humor. One of my favorite stories of him is when a friend of ours, a few years older that Dr. Laufer, went to see him. Dr. Laufer asked him about his diet and whether he ate a lot of red meat. Our friend said not much, just salami and bacon. Dr. Laufer replied, "Frank, that's like telling me that you aren't hooked on drugs, except for heroin and cocaine."

He was a wonderful man who had a positive impact on a lot of folks.
