Edward McCRADY Obituary

McCRADY, Edward Daniel Edward Daniel McCrady, beloved husband, father, son and brother, passed away suddenly and tragically at his home in Atlanta on January 17, 2018. Ed was born on December 16, 1963, in Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated at the top of his class from Penn Hills High School in 1981, and in 1985 received his B.S. degree from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. At UVA he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and a Lawn room resident. Upon graduation Ed moved to Atlanta where he worked for Citizens & Southern National Bank and The First Boston Corporation. He then moved to Chicago and earned his M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He returned to Atlanta and worked for The Robinson-Humphrey Company and Robertson, Stephens & Company. For the last 15 years, Ed was Co-Owner and Chief Executive Officer of Atlanta Storage Partners, a franchisee of PODS, operating in five cities. He served on the Board of Trustees of The Lovett School and the Advisory and Foundation Board of the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. He was active with YPO and was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club. Ed met the love of his life, Pattie Sapp, in 1990, and they married on May 8, 1993, at Avondale Pattillo UMC. As a family, the McCradys have been longstanding, active members at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Ed was a devoted husband and father, whose life centered on his wife and their four children, Eddie, Max, Evelyn and Ruth. Ed loved his children dearly and took great interest and pride in all of their endeavors. He valued relationships, and not only stayed connected, but kept others connected as the ringleader of numerous gatherings among college classmates, fraternity brothers, and friends new and old. Whatever Ed was involved in, he was an enthusiastic participant. He planned family ski and beach trips, cheered for the Lovett Lions, the UVA Cavaliers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and was an avid reader and observer of culture. He will be remembered as smart and witty, as well as the source and subject of funny stories that his friends and family will tell for years to come. Ed truly leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew him. In addition to his wife and four children, Ed is survived by his parents Brenda and Edward McCrady III of Pittsburgh, PA; his sister Amy Kemp (Chris), nephews Charlie and David and niece Maggie, of Lakewood, OH; his in-laws Martha and David Sapp of Hartwell, GA; and his brother-in-law David Sapp, III, of Brunswick, GA. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 24th at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. A reception at the church will follow the service. The Edward D. McCrady Memorial Fund has been established at the University of Virginia for those wishing to make a contribution in Ed's honor. Please make checks payable to the University of Virginia and reference the ""McCrady Memorial Fund"" in the memo line. Contributions can be sent to: UVA Gift Processing Services, PO Box 400331, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4331 or also made by calling 434-924-1008.

Ed was a mentor of mine for almost 15 years. A fellow UVA grad, I was introduced to him when I was leaving the consulting business and aiming to become an entrepreneur. He was supportive, encouraging, and offered to open his network up to me -- and, it was a big one. After I landed in an early stage company, Ed became one of our first customers and was always an advocate and supporter, even when the dream was not yet reality. I valued my friendship with Ed greatly, and he was always there when I had questions or needed advice. I will be forever indebted to him for his guidance and support and will miss him tremendously.

There aren't enough words to describe the Ed I knew properly. He was larger than life when we became friends in the late 1980's. He gave me a nickname immediately and was someone who loved people tremendously. While we have not seen each other regularly at all since the early 90's, I still remember stories Ed told me about random things like how his mom only had to change 1 letter when she married his dad, and how proud he was of how he proposed to Patty. I ran into them last year at a UVA football and he was so proud of his 4 kids. Such a tragic loss for his family and friends, and I hope with time the stories and the laughter will continue. Our prayers are with Patty and his kids now, and will continue to be so in the future.
