Commander, U.S. Navy Retired AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Kenneth Rogers Holmes age 51, beloved husband of Deborah Holmes, humble servant and mighty man of God, rose to the throne of his Everlasting Father on October 16, 2005. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday October 19, 2005 at In Focus Community Church at 2:00 pm with Rev. Gene Smith officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Westover Memorial Park. Ken was an honor graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1976. Ken completed eight years of active service in the submarine corps, on the USS Mendell Rivers, and retired as a commander in the United States Naval Reserve. He worked for Southern Nuclear for 22 years at Plant Vogtle and was a committed member of In Focus Community Church. Ken was a faithful and loving husband, father, and friend but most importantly a steadfast man of the living God. Pallbearers will include Tom Taylor, Craig McDaniel, Rick Odom, Jean Ductant, John Hudson, and John Fahy. Mr. Holmes is survived by his wife, Deborah Franklin Holmes; three children, Brett Franklin, Margaret Kirby and Catherine Middleton; his parents, William H. Holmes and Vera M. Holmes; one brother, Bill Holmes and his wife Karen of Wilmington, N.C; one sister, Cindy Mannella and her husband Mark of Winter Haven, FL. The family will be receiving friends at Platt's Funeral Home this evening Tuesday October 18, 2005 from 6 until 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the Meg's House at P.O. BOX 3410 Greenwood, S.C. 29648. Deb and family,

I just heard about Ken's passing away today and have been thinking about him alot. At the Naval Academy as classmates in the 30th company, I always remember Ken as very calm and confident; he was always easy to talk with and had a great sense of humor. We were in the Brigade color guard together, both as rifle bearers - those were fun times.

Since graduation, I always enjoyed getting your Christmas cards with the pictures of your growing family and it has been nice to stay in touch though we have only seen each other a few times over the years.

I am sure Ken has been a role model father and husband to all of you. He will be greatly missed but I am confident as you are that he is in heaven with his Savior and we will see him again.

My deepest sympathy and prayers are with you. (Psalms 62:1-2)

I served with Ken on the L. Mendel Rivers, and learned of his passing from Rusty Pickett. I knew him to be a fine and outstanding man. My heart felt sympathy goes out to your family with your loss.

I served abord Rivers one week after commisioning in 1975 to fall of 1976.

Then again from Dec. 1979 to May of 1983.

I retired in 1989 off the Sunfish.

Deb and family, you probable don't remember me. I served with Ken onboard the fine ship L. Mendel Rivers. I was the Yeoman onboard. Ken was a great leader and a very honest man. I'm sorry for your loss, but know he is in a better place and we will all see him again. May God give you all strength during this difficult time.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. The news of Ken’s passing came to me untimely from the USNA Alumni network. I was overwhelmed with sadness, and regret not being able to attend the viewing and the funeral.

Deb, although words are of little comfort at a time like this, please know that you and your family are all in my thoughts and prayers in this time of sadness and eventual healing.

Even though I have not associated with Ken since graduation, I didn’t have to go far to hear others speak of a fellow classmate so fondly or remember him so vividly. Evidently, so many, many people, as I, in our Academy and follow-on years, valued our association with Ken.
