Guy Davidson Obituary

Davidson, Guy A.
Guy A. Davidson was born in Santa Paula, CA on February 22, 1930 and passed peacefully to his eternal home on November 7, 2016 in Chandler, AZ. Pastor Guy was know for his kindness, sense of humor, authenticity, love of children and fun loving spirit. He was driven by passion for people and his faith. The fourth of six boys, Guy moved with his family to Arizona in 1939 where he graduated from Phoenix Union High School. He went on to attend Vanguard Univ/Costa Mesa, CA; Cascade College/Portland, OR; Central Bible College/ Springfield, MO; and Western Seminary/Portland, OR. Western Seminary awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2002. His life in ministry began in 1951 as a Student Pastor at Community Church in Long Lane, MO, followed by a role as Youth & Education Director, First Assembly of God, Portland, OR while attending seminary. Guy became Director of Publicity for Gospel Publishing House in the mid-1950's, before becoming the Assoc Pastor at Calvary Temple in Denver, CO. In 1956 he was Senior Pastor of Peoples Church in Fresno, CA. In December 1960, Guy married his sweetheart, Martha in Denver while working again at Calvary Temple. Feeling called, along with three other families, to begin a new church in the fast growing Phoenix area, Guy held Grace Community Church's first service in Tempe on January 8, 1967. Under Guy's leadership Grace Christian Academy was started and Grace Community Church began its long involvement in international Christian mission work and continued to grow becoming one of the first mega-churches in the East Valley. Between 1988-1992, Guy served as VP of Samaritan's Purse and Director of World Medical Mission based in Boone, NC. Following a pastorate in Danville, CA he and his wife returned to Arizona and helped launch Grace Fellowship Church in Buckeye. Soon after, they, along with Ellen & Elmer Bradley, founded Arizona Community Church in Tempe where they ministered until 2002. In 2000 Guy suffered a catastrophic stroke. Rehabbing for years, Guy was able to regain his ability to walk and talk again. With re-found ability to communicate, he was able to continue spreading his positive attitude, joy in life and was an example of how someone can be happy in spite of adversity. Throughout his life, Guy was an advisor and trusted friend to leaders of many groups and organizations, and served on the boards of Food for the Hungry, Samaritan's Purse/World Medical Mission, Valley Christian High School, Global Outreach Mission, Mafraq Sanatorium Assoc and Tempe St. Luke's Hospital. Guy had a passion for mission work and was especially committed to the work of David & Mary Lamb and the Grace Churches & Schools in Calcutta, India. Guy's phone calls, personal notes and letters and always remembering their names, reminded his congregation that he was thinking about them and always concerned and interested about their well being and spiritual growth. It was not uncommon for Guy do a hospital call, perform a wedding and preach four services all on the same day. Guy is survived by his wife Martha, of 55 years, son Carey (Heather), daughter Shelly (Mark), granddaughter Caylee and brother Mark. Memorial Service will be held at 3:00pm on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Grace Community Church: 1200 E. Southern Avenue, Tempe, AZ 85282. Gifts in memory of Guy Davidson may be designated to the Davidson Memorial Fund at Grace Community Church. This fund will include the building of an electronic library featuring more than 1000 original sermon outlines created by Pastor Guy over the years. Pastors around the world will have free access to these resources.

Our precious daughter, Christin Rebecca, passed away at the age of 35 in 2016, so I understand how the sorrow may lessen in intensity, but the missing never ends while on this earth. I have such wonderful memories of Pastor Davidson, his energy and joy. May God continue to comfort and encourage those family and friends who remain on this earth. Pastor Guy blessed the lives of so many with the truth of the Gospel and the Bible.

Pastor Guy, such a special man. He shared the love of Christ and invited others to place their trust in Christ Jesus for salvation for all eternity and to live lives to honor our Lord while living on this earth. When my dad was dying, Pastor Guy and Martha came to the hospital to seGood Samaritan in Phoenix, even though my dad had been living in Dewey, AZ for years and not attended a church where Pastor Guy was ministering. His attentiveness to people and heart for each to know Christ will always be a special memory for me. I loved attending WOW that Martha so adeptly taught. Her teaching on the 23rd Psalm will always be a favorite. Their daughter had a little lamb for
4-H so she had some extra insight. Thank you to you both for starting Grace Community Church in Tempe. I was a junior or senior in high school at the time. I am so grateful Jesus is my Rock and Redeemer. Thank you Pastor Guy for clearly and simply explaining the Gospel of Christ to me as one of our very small youth group.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Martha Davidson? I now live in the Northwest.

My heart is broken at this loss of Pastor Guy. He is the one who is truly responsible for telling me about Jesus and the Gospel so that the Holy Spirit could prompt my heart to place my trust in Christ alone for salvation . Pastor Guy will always hold a very special place in my heart, always. I remember sitting in his kitchen in 1967 and him clearly explaining the Gospel. I will always be grateful to Pastor Guy and my years at Grace Community.
I love you, Pastor Guy, Judi (West) Mosteller

How wonderful to pull up my email and find this remembrance of our amazing, loving pastor, Guy Davidson. In this time of hunkering down during COVID-19, how uplifting to reread the loving memories. I have one more. I was caring for a grandson, Zach (3) twice a week while his mother, our daughter, Tori Lee, was attending MCC to become a nurse. One day was spent in their home and the other in ours. While at ours, (30 years ago) new homes were being built across the street in Mountain Park Ranch so I walked Zach over to look at all the "BIG Trucks." I saw two men leave a partially built home and recognized Elmer Bradley. Now, I had recently learned that Guy and Martha had returned to the valley after working with the Billy Graham team, so I thought, "That other man has to be Guy Davidson." I stepped out into the cul-de-sac as the truck approached, they stopped, and I said, "Hi, Guy Davidson." He hadn't seen me for quite a while but he said, "Just a minute, mother of five, Lori Pilcher." I wasn't surprised because I had never met anyone who had a mind for names like Guy. Martha, you and Guy are in my heart forever and I love you dearly.

This happened in 1972. WOW had an annual Mother-Daughter event held the Saturday before Mother's Day and this was the second year. This event included a contest for a Mother of the Year to be named at the luncheon. The children wrote a letter in their Sunday school classrooms, "Why my mother should be Mother of the Year." The letters of my two daughters were selected and I was the winner. Guy called me that evening and asked me to give my testimony at the service I attended the next day. I had never "witnessed" but I wasn't about to say NO to Guy. Needless to say, I was a wreck about this. WELL, I waited and waited and waited, praying for God to help me get through this, and he forgot to call me up. He found me outside after the service and was so apologetic. I laughed and said, "Guy, my prayers were answered." Thank you Guy for being a blessing in my life.

I first encountered Guy at GCC in 1977. I was a teenager and my parents had recently divorced, precipitating a move from New England to Tempe. Raised a Catholic, I had never heard the Gospel preached clearly from the Word, and had no understanding of the Bible until I was invited to attend GCC by some high school friends. I came to faith that very first Sunday in August, and like a good Catholic, prayed the "prayer" of salvation each Sunday thereafter until with horror I realized that it needed only be prayed once! GCC was my church home through my college years at ASU until I left the area. I'm now a graduate of Dallas Seminary (M.A. in Biblical Counseling) and work at a ministry in western PA called Project Restore. We're called to survivors of human trafficking and to families in crisis. I thank God for Guy, his positive energy, his passion for Christ, his contagious joy, and the freedom with which he lived out his life for Christ. I will always remember him fondly.

Went to Grace about 1968 when he was starting the Church and it was very small. He was a Great Pastor and seemed to remember our names even after years of not seeing us. Miss him.

The Memorial/Celebration of Life service yesterday was wonderful; a blessing to all who attended. So many memories flood my mind, but I remember him taking the time to bless my new car and dedicated it to our Lord. Many years later, when we bought a new car we gave the blessed car to GCC.

Dave and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Pastor Davidson. Even though we both attended (and were married in) a Methodist church, I had never heard an invitation to invite Christ into my heart and have a personal relationship with my Lord, until hearing Guy say those words. I knew who Jesus was but didn't know that I had to personally invite Him in; so I did. We began attending GCC when a friend told us about it and it was love with the first visit, which was one year after it began and the church services were in the first building on the corner of Terrace and Southern. I attended WOW (Women of the Word) which was led by Martha, and learned how to read and understand the Bible because of her knowledge of the Bible and amazing teaching skills. I was so sad for GCC when they received a new calling with the Billy Graham Ministry but so happy for their new challenges and knew they would be such a blessing to that Ministry. They have been, and are forever, in my heart and my beautiful Christian life is because of them. Lorilee Pilcher

If ever there was a reason we are in ministry it is because of Guy and Martha. They taught us what it meant to truly shepherd people, what it meant to care for those less fortunate, what it meant to be committed to excellence. Guy was a man of great humor, wit, kindness, tenderness, vision, passion and zeal - all centered on the Gospel! Our hearts are with Martha as she was his cheerleader and champion all the days they were together. They had a marriage that represented what it mean to be yoked to one another. We are forever changed by their ministry in our lives. We love you Martha and will NEVER forget you or Guy.

I remember the first time I attended Grace Community Church and heard Pastor Davidson speak. I was incredibly moved by his words, the likes of which I had never heard before in the Catholic church. He literally changed me and I admired him very much. I also loved the AWE meetings held by his beautiful wife, Martha. Now, he's an angel to all of us. Love & peace to his family. -- Linda Jones

We started attending GCC in 1974. Pastor Davidson's sermons were always wonderful! I never saw Pastor walk by anyone without speaking to them. Ever!
When our son Kevin was diagnosed with bone cancer in 1979 my friend called the church to let Pastor know. Without us asking he was at the hospital within 45 minutes and stayed thru the surgery and waited until Kevin was awake to pray with him. He will always hold a very special place in my heart. Always.

I will always remember pastor Davidson. I came to know Christ in 1981 and my friend attended GCC and so I too started my journey in Christ under the teachings of Pastor Guy. I recall keeping tons of notes on his sermons which always spoke to my heart, fed me and helped heal many hurts I was going through at the time. My two sons came to Christ at GCC summer camp. Yes God did a great work through him and I will pray for his family in their loss.

I am sadden to hear of Guy's passing. While living in the same neighborhood over the years, he was a very special person, caring husband, a kind and God-loving spirited man with his family and friends and to all he came into contact with. He lived a good life, a long life to the fullest, and will be truly missed by everyone.
Hope lifts up those in sorrow and carries them to a place of peace...he is with the Lord. May eternal rest be granted to Guy, and perpetual light shine upon him forever, amen.
My prayers and thoughts are with you Martha, and the Davidson families.

Dear Pastor Davidson, I thank you for your presence in my family's life. I am now 59yrs old, married, 7 children and 11 grandchildren. The first Sunday after meeting my now husband, my husband wanted to come to church (Grace Community) with me. I will never forget that. My sister attended your school. Grace Community gave my family a strong foundation when we first moved to the valley.
My faith journey has continued to bring me and my family into a deeper love for JESUS CHRIST.
I have fond memories of the love you gave when I was in my early 20's. May the Peace of Christ be with your family. O Loving Father and Savior, send your angels to carry the soul of your servant from this earth to the heavenly place of eternal and everlasting life
