BELLINGHAM, WA - On April 7, 2023, Dowling (Speed) Gray Campbell passed away in Bellingham, Washington in his home with family and friends. He has been a resident of Washington for the last seven years, coming from Camp Verde and Flagstaff, Arizona.

He had a career at Northern Arizona University for 30 years as a Professor of English, Shakespear, Southwestern Literature, Technical Writing, sometimes on interactive TV. Dowling wrote several books about our presidents. Shakespeare, and the Grand Canyon, as well as historic fiction. During his last year he wrote "The Five Most Recent Fake Presidents and Why They Like the Lie." This, and some of his previous works, are in print and available online.

Outdoor activities were a special love of Speed's. He was adept at water activities and organized canoeing and kayaking expeditions on rivers that included his beloved Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

Dowling influenced many people who loved his intellect, his humor, his music, physical abilities, ingenuity, and all types of sporting activities.

His family will miss him greatly. He is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Cathy Beecham and husband Andy, Connie Campbell, Barbara Cosolito, and son Keven Chester and wife Mary. Speed was married to my cousin Betty for many years. I will always love him for the way he embraced my kids and me. My parents, Chester and Harriet Newton, were very fond of him too. Speed was intellectual, yet also adventurous, and he liked to pull others into his adventures. I will miss him.

Darling Dowling was my name for our Dowling. I say ours for he belonged to the wind, to the peoples everywhere his great mind took him, in the blink of an eye he would be involved in the direction of an instant worldly thought. Truly a Pied Piper, a flute almost always near by to lead children on a musical adventure, following happily his form, coaxing their efforts of mastering the skill of life in the moment, laughter, no pressure to be perfect, accepting their newness to the letter, paintbrush, piano, River running, climber of mountains, visions of Petroglyphs unseen to most others he shared with a few, knowing the secret was safe. The cities his playground of museums, music, theater, loving being part of such performances or greatly appreciating the acting before his person, every nuance part of his being. He will drag one on walks of length stretching their efforts to keep up beyond their capacity to do so until the choice becomes compassion or push harder for their unlimited acceptance to just keep moving ...Once he took two middle aged sisters out into Long Island Sound, in a small canoe craft, life jackets donned, laughter and fear hampering their efforts, the first brave one following his detailed instructions, while holding Dowling´s hand to step into the boat, on the shore, to be launched into the water once these girls were aboard and seated, almost never made it to that launching moment, as she instead of sitting into the boat missed and sat down in the water itself! The dismay on her smiling face, laughter erupting from deep within these two sisters almost brought Dowling to the edge of frustration, he did not give up! Offering instead hus hand for lifting her up, helping again her into the boat finally seated, he turned his attention to the second laughing, totally unsure sister! Squealing protest, still laughing finally .., he drags the loaded boat into the waters staying very close to a shore filled beach, with persons pretending they see nothing, while all this commotion of launch, laughter, falling in the waters, and finally moving farther he stands, in the boat, turns gently toward the shore and takes a very deep, hat in hand bow! The beach people having seen it all, totally erupt into full laughter, hand clapping, with splendid joy in the great performance! That was "our " Dowling ! He would sing anywhere any time, teaching all children a new song, with their names and games included in his created stanza's, Jackalope, I See The Moon, The Moon Sees Me; Everyone included! He had all children of all ages, really he allowed the child in all out to play, but he also had two very special ones he talked about in all our story times, and music, Cathy and Connie, he carried in his heart for all of us to know through his stories of shenanigans. Suddenly he would, in motion pull from his pocket a colorful bandana, lie down wherever there was a spot, place the bandana over his eyes, for just a quick nap, conversation, music, aside, a peaceful rest!
Watch, he will dance !
May this time create your next performance I love you Sweet Dowling, "Our Sissy Mitzi"

I have fond memories of him sharing time on the rivers and hiking, his knowledge of writing, music, and sense of humor.
