Al Gricus was my Godfather and a friend to my family, going back to my grandmother, Mary Yeskutis. He was also a lifelong friend to my mother, Alberta Yeskutis Hartford, who was born in Brighton and lived originally on Kelley Court. As my Godfather, of course, he was a friend from the beginning. Throughout my childhood he always remembered me at my birthday and Christmas, at my first Holy Communion and confirmation. I will always be grateful for that. But even more than that, he was a friend to my family during the many years of my father's illness, up until my father's death in 1966. In my 60 plus years I have never met anyone as faithful and constant as my Godfather Al. As I experienced first hand, illness is the real test of friendship, and Al alone was the one who would visit through the years of my father's illness and my family's resulting poverty.
As an adult I tried to make an effort to return that faithfulness. When I was able to visit Boston I made an effort to get to know Al better, and I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to learn more about his life and friendship with my family. I also enjoyed his lively conversation and vibrant interest in life. I will try to honor his advice and example in my own life.
I am also grateful that I was able to attend his annual picnic/birthday celebrations with his son Chuck and his many friends. I was extremely impressed by the people who came to these get togethers, even people, now retired, who had apprenticed under Al. This is a testament that very few receive in their working life.
Al was a great role model and I will always remember him and his many words of encouragement. In word and deed, he was truly a great man.
God bless you Al, your son Chuck, your grandchildren Laura, Alexander, and Amanda, your great grandchildren, Hannah and Jack, and your whole family. You always walked with God, and I know that you will dwell forever with him and your beloved wife, Anne.
With love.
Your Godson,
Jack

My deepest sympathy to the Gricus Family. It was always a great joy to see Al at the many community events we held at Harvard. I looked forward to his "secret handshake" and his warm smile. It was a pleasure to know Al. May he rest in peace.

My sister was blessed to have Al as her father-in-law for the past 25 years. His love for family, zest for life, ever-present energy and positive attitude are what I will remember most about this remarkable man. He touched so many lives in his 95 years....his generous spirit will live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, and all who loved him.
